  1. Nanotechnology and Food Kris Klapprodt

  2. Size • Nano is 10^-9 compared to the base in the SI units • 10 micrometers 10^-6 is width of red blood cell • 10 nanometers is the width of a cell membrane • 1nanometer is about the size of a sugar molecule Red Blood Cell Sugar www.understandingnano.com

  3. Nano and Food • Food Storage • Nutrition • Fighting Contaminants www.understandingnano.com

  4. Food Storage • Clay Nano composites -made by dispersing a nanoclay into a host polymer -also called exfoliation -Nano composites are better barriers, more flame resistant, structurally strong -impermeable to gases and liquids www.understandingnano.com

  5. Food Storage • Silver Particles -silver has been proven to fight mold and fungus on a microscopic level -antimicrobial nanoparticles in the polypropylene material of the container reduce growth of microorganisms www.understandingnano.com

  6. Food Storage • Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles -put into plastic film and improves strength and stability -blocks UV rays -fights bacteria www.understandingnano.com

  7. Nutrition • Nano capsules in Food -Nano capsules that contain vitamins or other nutrients infused into food -capsules would release nutrients if digested or by nanosenor in the body -would be useful in storage of vitamins in the human body -this is still in research www.understandingnano.com

  8. Fighting Contaminants • Nano Sensors -nano sensor that could detect food contaminants in 15 min. -regularly could take 24 hours to detect contaminants -detects contaminants such as salmonella, e coli, or listeria www.understandingnano.com

  9. Fighting Contaminants • Pesticides -nano capsules are being researched to carry pesticides directly to the insects -the insect would ingest the nano capsule that was on the plant and once inside the insect it would kill it -this would cause less contamination to the plants themselves www.understandingnano.com

  10. Outlook • Sharper Image • Is coming out with a new silver nano particle container called “Fresher Longer Miracle Food Storage Containers” www.understandingnano.com

  11. Outlook • Nano Sensors -NSD (Nano Science Diagnostics) is developing sensors that detect food contamination in only 15 min. -traditionally it takes at least 24 hours to detect a food contamination -these nano sensors are being developed in a kit, cartridge, and a hand held instrument www.foodproductiondaily.com Ahmed Elamia www.understandingnano.com

  12. Outlook • The storage products using nano technology are much farther along • The nano sensor is in testing phase • The nano capsules for pesticides and nutrition are still being researched www.understandingnano.com

  13. Conclusion • Nano technology can greatly help the food industry by creating safer, healthy storage devices. • Nano technology can also help fight against food contamination. www.understandingnano.com
