  1. Urbanization and its Effects on Stream Systems, Specifically at Grant Creek of Midewin National Tallgrass Prairieby: Britany Block Photo by: Jeff Tepp

  2. Did the building of Center Point Construction Effect the Stream Levels of Grant Creek at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie? Little to no effects on Grant Creek were shown. Grant Creek’s stream levels closely related to those of the precipitation of the day.

  3. Careful time and planning caused Center Point Construction to have little effect on Grant Creek’s stream levels and water quality. Photo by: Jeff Tepp

  4. Will County Regulations • Sec 201.1 of Will County Requirements for storm water management requires all construction of detention ponds to make runoff exit the site at a point where it previously could exit the site and where it will not do extreme property or environmental damage • Specific rates at which water is allowed to be released are dependent on committees for that specific site • If there are no water quality committees for a specific site, the rate is .15 cfs/ acre of development during a rainfall event with 100 yr frequency

  5. Urbanization, if NOT done correctly, CAN harm stream levels and processes. Why?

  6. Excessive storm water runoff • Erosion • Loss of baseflow • Deterioration of water quality

  7. Excessive Storm Water Runoff • Impervious surfaces cause excess runoff • Using impervious surfaces for building materials displaces water • Can create irregular stream flows • Irregular stream flows expand stream channels

  8. Erosion • Erosion destroys sides of streams • It can destroy habitats and plant species.

  9. Loss of Baseflow • Multiple studies have shown that urbanization can decrease stream flow by nearly 70%

  10. Deterioration of Water Quality • Excessive runoff increases stream flow dragging more sediment into streams and lowering habitat quality • Excess of building chemicals can harm native species

  11. What is being done with already harmed Streams?
