  1. Power, Love and Self-discipline:Our Mental HealthJames 5:14 and 1 Timothy 5:23 2 Timothy 1 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

  2. In trouble – pray Happy – sing Sick – anoint and pray Prayer is effective

  3. James 5 13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

  4. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

  5. What happens when we pray and nothing changes? What do we take God’s answer to mean? What are we to do?

  6. 1 Timothy 5 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

  7. 1 Timothy 5:23 23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

  8. Timothy – the young pastor was ill A chronic illness In Paul’s time… Some regarded wine as medicinal Others regarded wine as evil

  9. In that time… Some also believed healing could only come through spiritual means The people of Israel were not abstainers Nor did they believe that healing came only through spiritual means There were doctors in those days

  10. 1 Timothy 5:23 23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

  11. This little understood verse is very important and insightful “Stop being an abstainer” from the medicine… It makes no sense to be sick when God provided us the medicine A little For health

  12. Timothy may have thought… • His witness might be in jeopardy if he took the medicine • It might show a lack of faith • It might create controversy • Timothy might simply not like the medicine

  13. Paul wants to help us remove…. Our struggle over taking medicine Our feelings and issues of guilt Ideas that pain and suffering are requirements of the faith The belief: if it is not spiritual it is wrong

  14. These words are for timothy and us God works through various means Paul did not want his young pastor to be sick when the medicine was so readily available

  15. Prosthetics Heart issues Diabetes Headache Mental health Depression Bipolar ADHD, OCD Schizophrenia

  16. Medications Some of us love meds Others of us run away from them If they help If we need it Take the medicine

  17. 2 Timothy 1 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
