  1. How it all Started… The creator of the Buffalo Wing Festival, Drew Cerza, was inspired to start this proud Buffalonian tradition from a movie starring Bill Murray. The movie was Osmosis Jones. Bill Murray played the character of an ambitious and compulsive eater. His life long goal was to attend the Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival, which was nothing but fiction at the time. Drew Cerza made it happen here in Buffalo in 2002. It has been going on each year after that at Coca-Cola Field in Downtown Buffalo. • http://www.buffalowing.com/c-20-festival-history.aspx

  2. The Wing Fest in Numbers… Over 407,000 people served! 2.4 Million Wings Consumed! 137 tons of Wings in Weight! 191 Restaurants Participated! Over $125,000 raised for Charity! 1 Wedding! (2006)

  3. The Wing King… Drew Cerza, better known as the Wing King, is the father and founder of the Annual Buffalo Wing Festival. Cerza has been featured on many nationally broadcasted shows and showdowns. He was challenged by world renowned TV Chef Bobby Flay to create the best Chicken Wing. Of course, Cerza won. He has shared his perfect Buffalo Wing recipe on The View, Live! With Regis and Kelly, The Food Network and many more national news channels.

  4. Tourism Boost… It is shown on the Wing Fest website that there are 4 local hotels located near both the Buffalo Airport and Coca-Cola Field. All of these Hotels also provide discounted rates for people out of town visiting Buffalo for the Buffalo Wing Festival.

  5. Marketing Plan… Since advertising and radio time is expensive, the Wing King and his crew have come up with new ways to spread the word about the festival. Drew is currently putting together a Wing Fest Tour, hitting the cities of Pittsburg, PA and Charlotte, NC. Another new idea this year, Wing TV,will be a live webcast of the upcoming and future festivals, set to begin Labor Day 2011. It will most likely be a live news feed panning to different events and aspects of the festival- such as the wing eating contests or Miss Buffalo Wing Pageant.

  6. Marketing Plan continued… The most challenging thing that organization faces is something they cannot control: the weather. Since the wing festival is an outdoor event, rain will put a serious damper on attendance. This year they have Food Networks “Ace of Cakes” star Duff Goldman and his band coming to play at Wing Fest 2011. Fireworks are also another possibility depending on budget. It is clear according to our interview with Drew Cerza that if the money was there, they would use as much as they could to campaign the event.

  7. Our Marketing Plan… A good marketing strategy could be to entice customers to both use the airport and go to the festival by offering discounted tickets when purchasing flights and admissions. You get more attendees and the airport gets more flyers. This is not limited to the Niagara Falls airport; you can run this with the Buffalo airport as well. What would be an interesting suggestion could be seeing advertisements that were used during all Buffalo sporting events. The small presence during such large events like a Sabres or a Bills game could be extremely beneficial on both inside and outside popularity.
