  1. Objective 10/31/12 Locate the epicenter and focus of an earthquake Intro • Which is more powerful, an Earthquake, or a: • hand grenade? • stick of dynamite? • nuclear bomb? • meteor impact?

  2. Earthquake Measurement

  3. Earthquake Measurement • Seismograph • Seismogram • An instrument that detects seismic waves • A record of the seismic waves Show Seismograph Flipchart Show Mt. St. Helens Seismogram

  4. Earthquake Measurement • S-P Time Method • Determines location of epicenter • Uses the time it takes the waves to travel from the epicenter to a seismograph station • Need at least THREE seismograph stations to determine location of EQ

  5. Earthquake Measurement [San Francisco]

  6. Earthquake Measurement • Richter Scale • Magnitude • Mercalli Scale • Measures magnitude of earthquake • Measure of energy released by an earthquake • Measures amount of damage from an earthquake

  7. Earthquake Measurement

  8. Earthquake Measurement [Valdivia]

  9. Earthquake Measurement • Want to know where the most recent earthquakes are?

  10. Earthquake Measurement • Summary: • A seismograph is an instrument used to detect and measure the strength of earthquakes. The S-P Time Method helps locate the epicenter of an earthquake, but it needs at least three seismograph stations. The Richter Scale measure the energy of an earthquake while the Mercalli Scale measures how much damage is done.

  11. Objective 10/31/12 Locate the epicenter and focus of an earthquake Outro What? So What? Now What?
