  4. What is an Invasive Non-Native Species? • INNS are considered the second biggest threat after habitat loss and destruction to biodiversity worldwide. • SNH and NE identified 988 and 2,271 non-native species present in Scotland and England respectively. • However, a minority of non-native species can become dominant in the environment where they may impact on native species, transform ecosystems and cause environmental harm.

  5. Japanese knotweed • Fallopia japonica

  6. Himalayan balsam • Impatiens glandulifera

  7. Giant Hogweed • Heracleum mantegazzianum

  19. Invasive Non-Native Species Crayfish plague Fish Diseases Amphibian Diseases Livestock Diseases What are we concerned about?

  20. Pathways of spread • Our movements • Monitoring • Inspection • Transferring assets • Working in the environment • Capital works • Maintenance • Regulation • Waste • Water

  21. How sure are you that you’re not spreading something?

  22. Public awareness • Non-Native Species Secretariat is coordinating a national communications campaign on biosecurity • This campaign targets anglers, boat users and water users.

  23. Check, Clean, Dry

  24. What we do: • Plan route / surveys • Talk to the landowner • Park away from farm • Have clean equipment & PPE • Use on-site washing area • Stay away from livestock • Clean equipment before leaving • Virkon S • Spray bottle/pumps • Bath/container • Check & Dry equipment • Keep records

  25. Check, Clean, Dry Disinfect, where needed Report sightings Ask for advice: Paul Breslin x2789 Dawn Grundy x2644 Summary: Thank you
