Useful online free tools: • All are easy to use without specialist knowledge • Replicate more complicated tools used by academics • Less sophisticated but much less learning investment required • And in some cases better than academic tools! • Mapping with Google Fusion Tables and Doogal • Estimating populations in local areas using Population Builder • Exploring the 2011 Census with Datashine • Profiling populations with the National Records of Scotland S-CSDP, 4 Mar 2016

  3. 1 Mapping Tools • Google Fusion – you will need a google login https://www.google.com/fusiontables/data?dsrcid=implicit Estimating populations in local areas using Population Builder • www.doogal.co.uk – everything postcode! • www.qgis.org is a geographic information system (ie mapping software) which is free but requires a great deal of knowledge to use S-CSDP, 4 Mar 2016

  5. 3 Datashine http://scotland.datashine.org.uk • Visualises 2011 Census data in a very user-friendly way • Can also download underlying data • Versions exist for other parts of the UK S-CSDP, 4 Mar 2016

  6. 4 National Records for Scotland http://www.scotlandscensus.gov.uk/ods-web/home.html • A more comprehensive suite of tools for viewing and comparing Census 2011 data • although Datashine is better at mapping! • Can also download all kinds of text files of data and cross-tabulations S-CSDP, 4 Mar 2016
