  1. Stand up and Speak out against bullying No H8ers!

Survey • Please answer the questions to the best of your ability • Do not put your name on it (anonymous) • This is NOT a test • Answers are anonymous—no one will see them except the counselors, so put what you think, not what your neighbor thinks • We will use your responses to help us develop lessons for future students • Turn the paper over and I will collect them when everybody is done

  3. GOALS FOR TODAY: • Review • Show how bullying impacts ARHS • Give you tools to handle these situations • Give you resources at ARHS and in the community • What you can do to speak out against bullying and make school a safe, expressive place to be

  4. Can you tell me what a bully is? • Definition: Aggressive behavior with an intent to hurt another person physically, socially, or mentally • It is characterized by an imbalance of power between an instigator and a victim. http://www.facinghistory.org/resources/collections/bullying

  5. Types of bullying • Physical-hurting someone (or their property) by physical force • Emotional/Psychological-attacking someone’s thoughts, feelings, self-esteem, confidence, beliefs, verbal

  6. Other types • Relational-purposefully excluding someone from your social group, making fun of someone else, starting or continuing rumors • Cyber (online)-Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, google+, Instagram…

  7. So you’re online. Partner brainstorm (1-2 minutes): What does cyber bullying look like? Specifics. What is okay? What isn’t?

Signs of someone being bullied • Depression, loneliness, or anxiety • Low self-esteem • Missing school, disliking school, or having poorer school performance than previously • Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations (withdrawn) • Harmful behaviors or thoughts

Stats nationwide • Bullying is real. • “2 out of 3 teens reported being physically or verbally harassed every year” (67%!) • “Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying.” • “71 percent of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school.” • “Victims report lower school performance and school attachment” http://www.dosomething.org/issues/bullying

  10. How does ARHS compare? • At our own school, students say that bullying is a problem • Out of 130 kids, over 50% reported that it was still an issue, despite efforts to decrease bullying.

  11. Some students feel that they don’t fit in because of this (connection to others, school) • Also, about 35% of the surveyed group reported that they could not identify an adult at the school with whom they feel safe to talk with

  12. Who is involved in bullying? • Can you identify 4 ‘characters’ in a bullying situation? • Bully-person/group of people who are making fun of, hurting, or otherwise harassing an individual or other group • Victim-person/group of people who are the target of hurtful words and actions

  13. Characters continued… • Bystander- person who is watching it all happen and doesn’t speak up • Adult- person you tell if you see, hear, or are the target of bullying

  14. Bystander Effect Have you heard of the ‘bystander effect’? What is it? • The bystander effect is when someone/group of people watch an injustice happening and don’t step in to intervene. • We often think, “Someone has already reported the incident and help is on the way, so I don’t need to tell anyone.” (Ex: 911 calls) • BUT…What if we all think this? Then no one gets help. Be the one that gets help, tells an adult, and steps in when they see someone being bullied.

  15. Where does it occur? • It may occur in schools, online, home, work • It can involve physical aggression, social exclusion, derogatory comments, spreading rumors, or racial or sexual stereotyping. http://www.facinghistory.org/resources/collections/bullying

What tools can I use to help myself or my friends with bullying? • Stand up and speak out when you see or hear bullying happening • Be a part of the solution, not the problem • Tell an adult—a teacher, a counselor, a principle, the lunch lady, the custodian, your family, whomever you feel comfortable with.

What can I do to help make ARHS a better place? • Say something-let the person know that what they are doing is not okay • Make it a habit, not a one-and-done • Accept that we are unique individuals, but recognize that harassing someone because of differences is not okay • Invite new students into your peer groups—the overall feeling of fitting in with friends at school will make ARHS safer and accepting of differences

Also, ethnic, sexual, and racial slurs are considered to be assaults to human dignity. Students involved in these actions may be arrested, suspended, or receive other disciplinary actions. “ –ARHS Student Handbook
