  1. GOOD NEWS Finding a Purpose Worth Living For

  2. Review • Having trouble believing good news? • The challenge of accepting God’s grace and mercy • Sin’s awful curse; what it is and isn’t • Choosing to believe when all seems unbelievable

  3. Finding a purpose worth living for • The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation (Thoreau). • Lives of quiet desperation. Why? • Lives of fear: not being able to meet the needs of themselves and their loved ones; for general safety; living in a world growing colder • Lives of anger and frustration: hopes and dreams unmet; anger at a world getting meaner and colder • Lives of despair: settling in; giving up dreams; helplessness leading to hoplessness

  4. Ecclesiastes and Worldly Pursuit • Pursuit of worldly wisdom • Pursuit of pleasure • Pursuit of work • Pursuit of advancement • Pursuit of riches “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income” (5:10).

  5. The Summation of the Matter Ecc. 12:13-14 – Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty [purpose] of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. However, in general, our world still slavishly pursues these very worthless life pursuits mentioned: pleasure, wealth, work, advancement, and worldly wisdom (academia).

  6. Mark 1 – 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

  7. Kingdom of GOD is near • Repent • Believe the GOOD news • Follow Jesus and HE will make you… • At once they left their nets

  8. Mark 3 – 13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve—designating them apostles—that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. • To be with him • That he might send them out to preach • And to have authority to drive out demons

  9. Mark 16 – 15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
