  2. Background • Elisha is God’s prophet at the time (2 Kings 4) • There was a famine among God’s people (2 Kings 4:38) • The “sons of the prophets” were gathered for instruction, fellowship and order (2 Kings 4:38)

  3. Background • The stew appeared good but was actually poisonous and could have produced death (2 Kings 4:39-39) • God, through Elisha, made the stew safe to eat (2 Kings 4:40-41)

  4. Unintentional Fatality • The young men were nearly poisoned to death because of deceptive appearances • The action was unintentional, yet potentially fatal … there was death in the pot! • There was death in the pot in Jesus’ day (Mt. 15:1ff; 23:1ff) • Today, well-meaning people set before themselves death in the pot!

  5. Unintentional Fatalities Today“For they knew them not…” (2 Kings 4:39)Deceived to Death • Human philosophies (1 Cor. 3:18; Prov. 14:23) • Friendly associations (1 Cor. 15:33) • Conceited opinions (Gal. 6:3) • Intemperate lifestyles (Eph. 5:3-6) • Impure practices (Titus 3:3)

  7. What is the solution? • Determined way (2 Tim. 1:8,13; 3:14-16) • Dedicated teaching (2 Tim. 2:2) • Diligent study (2 Tim. 2:15) • Devout avoidance (2 Tim. 2:16-18; 3:13) • Desire for truth (2 Tim. 4:3-4)

Death in the Pot • There is death in the pot for those who don’t desire Bible truth (knowledge) • There is death in the pot for those who accept false doctrine and worldly philosophy • There is death in the pot for those who are not growing spiritually • There is death in the pot for those who focus on the worldly ways

  9. Death in the Pot • One poisonous ingredient leads to death! • When you know there is death in the pot, will you stop, or continue? • Don’t die of spiritual food poisoning!
