  1. Don’t Get On My Nerves! A presentation of neuroscience by: Sebastian Gomez, Jeremy Devaney, Anna Tartaglia, Samantha Lopen, and Sam Bushey.

  2. The Nervous System The nervous system is a very complex system in the body. It is split into two parts. One is the central nervous system and the other is the peripheral nervous system. The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is made of nerves which send the information to the brain. To simplify, the peripheral nervous system is the other parts of the nervous system besides the brain and the spinal cord. Without the nervous system you would not be able to move, so you would die.

Neurons • A neuron is the functional unit of the nervous system. • A human has over 100 billion neurons in their brain alone. • A neuron has 3 parts: dendrites, cell bodies, and axons. • Dendrites receive information from other cell bodies and sends it to its cell bodies. • Cell bodies contain nuclei, mitochondia, and other organelles. • Axons conduct messages away from the cell body. • There are four types of neurons: sensory, motor, interneurons, and mirror neurons. • Sensory neurons have long dendrites and short axons. They carry messages to the central nervous system. • Motor neurons have long axons and short dendrites. They transit messages from the central nervous system to muscles. • Interneurons are found in the central nervous system only and link neuron to neuron. • Mirror neurons are used when you copy something or someone. They are such copy cats!

  4. Brain The Brain is a very important part of the nervous system. It is made up of many parts. Each part is functioning all the time and you don’t even know it! The brain has 3 main parts; The medulla oblongata, cerebrum, and cerebellum. Mainly the Medulla oblongata is in charge of autonomic functions. For example, digestion, breathing, heart and blood vessel function, swallowing and sneezing and all other reflexes. This is located in the hindbrain. Next is the cerebellum, this is your balance. Finally the last part the Cerebrum. It is about %85 of the brain. It is made up of most of the other functions in your body.

  5. Brain Your brain is your body computer. It controls everything! Though it is divided into many different parts. Each part controls something different. One of the big parts of the brain is your cerebrum. Within the cerebrum there are many different parts. For example your primary motor cortex is in the cerebrum area. Along with other parts that control your body. But there is other parts that support some things in your body too. Such as the Cerebellum. This matins the balance in your body. When your brain is sending messages or receiving them, it mostly comes through the spinal cord. Except for your hearing and vision doesn’t go through the spinal cord. In order for your brain to send a message,it sends a message to whatever part you want to move or use, the message is sent to the dendrite. The dendrite sends it to the sell body, then the message travels through the axon to the next dendrite. To finally conduct the action the cell body causes the action.

The Spinal Cord • The spinal cord runs along the dorsal side of the body and links to the brain and the rest of the body • Your spinal cord is more than 3 quarters water • The brain and spinal cord form the center of the nervous system • The gray matter of the spinal consists mostly cell bodies and dendrites.

  7. The Spinal Cord (2) The spinal cord is the main pathway for connecting information from different parts of the body. Think of it as a nerve highway carrying information back and forth. Protected by the spinal column (spine), the spinal cord is 45 centimeters in men, and 43 centimeters in women. It contains 31 segments, 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal. Two spinal nerves exit from each segment of the spinal cord. The length of the spinal cord is much smaller than the spinal column. If you break your neck, your spinal cord can break, and since it is broken, the neurons can’t get past, making you paralyzed from where your spinal cord broke and down. Next to the brain, the spinal cord is very important to the nervous system, and without it, you would not be able to move.

  8. Spinal cord injury • Did you know the spinal cord is made of nerves the brain and the spinal cord. • When the spinal cord is injured it can longer send these singles to certain parts of the body. • This changes your ability to feel and move, and may affect other body mechanisms including bladder control. • Depending on the injury results in many different possible levels. • Whatever your level of important is however you still have the ability to learn new tools for leaden a fulfiling.
