  1. Future Energy Research in the EU under EIT conditions-pilot projects F. Pühringer-Oppermann, P. Bele, R. Bussar and U. StimmingAKE Springmeeting within the 73rd Annual Meeting of DPGE2.-6.3. 2009 Hamburg

  2. European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) „If Europe wants to remain competitive, then we must ensure that we improve the relationship inside the knowledge triangle: education, research and innovation“ Jose Manuel Barroso Ideal: MIT (USA) Virtual organisation with headquarter

  3. EIT-Milestones 17.10.08: The Governing Board elects the four members of the Executive Committee 15.09.08: The EIT marks the launch of its activities in Budapest with the first meeting of its recently appointed Governing Board, and unanimously elects Dr. Martin Schuurmans as its Chairman. 30.07.08: The EIT's first Governing Board is officially appointed following a selection process which began in February 2008. The 18-strong Board provides a collective balance of expertise and experience from the worlds of higher education, research, business and innovation in Europe. 18.06.08: EU Member States decide unanimously that the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) will have its headquarters in Budapest.

  4. Knowledge and intelligence communities (KIC) ObjectivesThe KICs will promote the production, dissemination and exploitation of new knowledge products and best practices in the innovation sector, transforming the results of higher education and research activities into commercially exploitable innovation Set-upseven-fifteen years, at least three partners (two from EU) 308MEUR (for first three KICS) TimeplanFirst two or three KICs selected January 20102009 dialogue with the stakeholders through seminars

  5. Focus Sustainable energy Mitigation and adaption of climate change Future information society Next topic most probably healthcare Four pilot projects advise the EC how to select the ideal collaboration structure for a KIC

  6. Pilot projects (2006/2007-11.2009) BRIDGEsolving real world problems with high commercial value in nanomedicine COMPLEX-EITembraces the complexity from nano to large electronic systems SUCCESSSearching unpredecented cooperations on climate and energy to ensure sustainability GASTgreen and safe road transportation

  7. Objectives/Main deliverables Collect and analyse practices in order to identify good practices for a cooperation model within the knowledge triangle Create a pan European collaborations model Test and validate some of the components of this new model Disseminate the results of the projects to the wider innovation community

  8. Specific Objectives BRIDGEDesign and test of an elite doctorate programme(Winter course on entrepreneurship with 15 students)Implementation of joint pilot research projects(need for administrativeproject management) COMPLEX-EITEducation/Research/Industry/Territories GASTsustainability

  9. COMPLEX-EIT Ignorance of other territories-competition-coopetition-coherent employment strategy

  10. Complex-EIT-Territorial Integration Center INNOVATIONacess to and capitalise knowledge (design tools)coinnovate betweenpartners and customers knowledge transferfrom university to industry demonstration tocustomers Setup pilot fabrication services EDUCATION Acquire excellencelocal and globaltrain studentson the state-of-the-artlife long learningduring projectseducation of citizenson technologies TIC(director)

  11. Complex EIT Management -Structure

  12. Complex-EIT (also SUCCESS)

  13. SUCCESS

  14. WP1: Transversal analysis of 66 European collaborations (CBS/ESADE) Basic information (member organisations) Operational level (IPR, FP7,legal entity, joint venture) Motivation and outcomes Topics related to governance and management Barriers? Experience, plans and learning University‘s side (incl. Education) Industry‘ side (incl. Education) Findings from an intensive literature review as benchmarks against which the survey findings are evaluated and analysed

  15. Literature: Antagonisms Large Horizontal Diversity Autonomy Openess Knowledge sharing Management of networks Small Networks Vertical integration Unity Control Protection Knowledge Expropriation Management in networks

  16. Empirical findings Wind, wave, hydrogen energy, sun cells, bio fuel cell and biogas, CCS, adjusting of motors 1-4 until more than 20 participants 20 collab are initiated less than 3 years ago, some with aim of project not yet fulfilled 8 of 10 the large collaborations funded by FP (EU prescribes size?), one third are national, EU funds about 58% of the projects Only one third legal entity and only one third shared physical space Industry wants to gain access to complementary resources 5 without leadership 7 joint ventures, 10 might form spin-off

  17. WP3.1 Objectives (CEA, Polito) Identification and analysis of the weaknesses of the case studies in terms of effective governance Focus on Links between edges of the knowledge triangle: between research and innovationinvolvement of education in the innovation process

  18. Accomplishment State-of-the-art of three selected topics 1.Energy efficiencyand CO2 reduction2. Energy storage and grids3. Climate and new developments in energy4. SUCCESS analysis Two network cases chosen/topic with development of a thorough description SWOT-Analysis

  19. Selected collaborations

  20. SWOT-Analysis (e.g. Cluster) Analysis of strength and weaknessesout of the project descriptionAnalysis of opportunities and threats out of the State-of-the-art • How can the network exploit each opportunity using its strengths? • How can the network exploit new opportunity by stopping its weaknesses?(e.g. One of the best strategies to realize partnerships with major European enterprises is to include in the network an industrial board) • How can the network defend against each threat using its strengths? • How can the network defend against each threat by stopping ist weaknesses?

  21. WP3.2-3.3 Experiments (CEA,TU/e, CBS, TUM) Improve weaknesses of the selected projects Combine (Cluster: education program together with industry) Test the governance structure developed in WP2-the MODEL (ESADE) Involve the ten issues of the EC

  22. Thank you for your kind attention !
