  1. Who was Mark Twain?? • Samuel Langhorne Clemens= real name • born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri= birth date and place • Mark Twain grew up in the Hannibal, Missouri • He was the person who measured the depth of the water for the boats. • It means that the water is two fathoms, or twelve feet deep. • Huck Finn was eventually published on December 10, 1884, in Canada and England, and on February 18, 1885, in the United States. • Huckleberry Finn was first attacked during Twain's day because of what some described as racist • the debate over Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has centered around the language of the book. some textbook publishers have substituted "slave" or "servant" for the term that Mark Twain uses in the book.

  2. What is the connection between "Mark Twain and Halley’s comet" • In 1835, the year Samuel Clemens, writer, reporter, and pub- lisher was born, Halley's Comet passed over. Twain vowed that he would not die until he saw the famous comet again. Then, just before Twain died, Halley's Comet passed over. He died the next day--April 10th, 1910 at 6:30 p.m.

  3. Mark Twain- a racist?? • Satire- sarcasm, irony • The critics feel the book is racist because of the language used in it. • 1.) Twain used this casual dialogue ironically, as a way to underscore the chilling truth about the old South. 2.) What you find in Twain is the opposite: a lively affection and admiration for black Americans that began when he was still a boy and grew steadily through the years. 3.) Mark Twain a "racist"! Isn't it about time we put this ridiculous notion to rest? • "Nearly all black and brown skins are beautiful, but a beautiful white skin is rare.“- Mark Twain • Twain uses satire in his writing by inserting the accurate dialogue to his book.
