  1. Dehumanization By Colin Shay

  2. “The Hungarian Police made us get in eighty people in each car.” (Wiesel,17) • This is dehumanization because the police were abusing their power when shoving 80 people in a car. • As you can see from the quote 80 people being shoved in to one car is inhumane like. • I believe Elie was trying to show us people how cruel the SS soldiers were like in the beginning of the holocaust.

  3. “Those of you who still have gold, silver, or watches in your possession must give them up. Anyone who is later found to have kept anything will be shot on the spot.” (Wiesel,18) • This is dehumanization because the SS soldiers would make them give them there gold or anything that was value to them if not given up they would be shot and killed. • If someone is being held up at gun point for their gold that would be against their right. • No human being should be rob someone else things.

  4. “He leapt on me, like a wild animal, hitting me in the chest, on the head, throwing me down and pulling me up again, his blows growing more and more violent, until I was covered with blood.” (Wiesel,39) • The guard leapt onto Elie beating him punch after punch Elie was taking the blows. • Elie could not even defend himself because he would have got even a worse punishment. • Just imagine a grown man and you trying to fight it is not going be a fair fight.

  5. “A box! He ordered. They brought him a box. Lie down on it! On your stomach! I obeyed.” (Weisel,42) • The soldier told Elie lay on a box so he could whip him from what he saw. • It is dehumanization because no human being should be whipped 25 times almost passing out. • The Jews had no rights when they came to these camps.

  6. “After a long moment of waiting the executioner put the rope around his neck. He was on the point of motioning to his assassination to draw the chair away from the prisoners feet.” (Weisel,46) • If you all think about this quote it is a deep and sad quote because a human had to kill himself. • This is dehumanization because a human had to take his life and push the chair out from him. • This is probably one of the quickest ways to die but also one of the scariest.

  7. “ To hang a young boy in front of thousands of spectators was no light matter.” (Weisel,47) • This is dehumanization because the young boy had to take his life in front of thousands of people watching him. • This would be so sad that not one person would help you out of those thousands of people. • Later in the book the boy did die in a very slow death and held on for as long as he could.

  8. “ Save us! You Promised! We want to go to the yard. Were strong enough to work. Were good workers. We can…We will.” (Wiesel,54) • The cries from people that said they could work but they really couldn’t in the SS soldiers mined. • I find this quote very disturbing because the people were crying and screaming to live because they were sent to die. • This is dehumanization because the cries from the people because they were said they could not work anymore and no one was going to save them.

  9. “ Near me, men were collapsing in the dirty snow. Shot.” (Wiesel,63) • The miles after miles those men had to run was horrible. • I think in the book they said they had to run about 50 miles. • This is dehumanization because if the men feel behind because they were weak they would be shot and killed.

  10. “ We stayed at Gleiwitz for three days. Three days without food or water.” (Wiesel,70) • The Jews were to stay in Gleiwitz to take a break from running. • These men had to suffer so bad because they ran how many miles but did not get any food or water for days! • This is dehumanization because they had to suffer for 3 days when most people can’t even last hours.

  11. “ Throwing out all the dead! All corpses outside.” (Wiesel,72) • The last quote I found was a disturbing quote from one of the soldiers. • This is dehumanization because all of those men and women that have died just get thrown into a pit or anywhere and they don’t even care. • Finally, these humans that were dead were treated like garbage and just thrown anywhere.
