  2. Externships • 1 Month Podiatry Rotation • Available for 3rd or 4th Year Students • Students may spend 1-2 days each month outside the VA with a resident to experience the other 70% of our program. Just talk with Dr Young.

  3. Student Hospital Rotation (Core)Four Students Selected-Eight Month Program • Vascular Surgery • Rehab Medicine • Medicine • General Surgery • Podiatry Clinic & Surgery • Medical Imaging • Emergency Medicine (only if your school requires) • 4 Months of Externships

  4. VA Podiatry Rotation • Podiatric Surgery • Average 20 cases/month • Full H&Ps on all pre-op patients • Biomechanical based rationale for surgery • Students present at pre-op conference & scrub case • Podiatric Office Procedures • Average 30/month • Nail surgery (sharp)/Simple soft tissue • Molded shoes/ orthotics casting with complete biomechanical work up • Active hands on participation

  5. VA Podiatry Rotation • Wound Care • 70-110 patient visits/week • Wound conference • Profore/Unna boot/Total contact cast therapy • Inpatient Service • 5-10 admissions/month • Independent admitting service • Majority are lower extremity infections • General Podiatry Clinic/Consults • 100-150 patient visits/week

  6. VA Podiatry Staff • Gregg Young DPM • Program Director • Nan Hodge DPM • Clerkship Director Clinical and Surgical Staff: • Daniel Huff DPM • Mikol Anderson DPM

  7. Vascular & General Surgery Rotation • High volume, includes ICU patients • Do admitting H&Ps • Scrub in on your patient’s surgery • Integrated with the U of U medical Students and Residents • 8-14 hour days

  8. Rehab Medicine Rotation • Active amputee service • Learn how to perform EMG/NCV studies • Physical and Occupational Therapy exposure

  9. Podiatric Office Rotation • Externship months may be spent at many of the local Podiatry Offices. See program website for list of attendings. (IMCPodiatryResidencyProgram.wordpress.com) • Diverse high volume private practices • Multiple office based procedures • Practice management • Hands on experience • Residents spend >70% of time outside the VA in these offices.

  10. Didactics • Weekly Resident Lecture Series. Frequent cadaver, sawbones and subspecialty lectures and labs. • Grand Rounds Monthly @ IMC Hospital • Pre-op & Wound Care Conferences • Hospital Rounds • Access to all VA library resources • Journal Club • Student presentation required on Podiatry rotation

  11. Intermountain Medical Center Residency • Full CPME approval as a PM&S-36 • Residents = 18 • Podiatry Attendings = >65

Current Hospital Affiliations: 2nd and 3rd Year Surgical Rotations. • Over 65 Podiatric and Orthopedic attendings. • Residents may choose which cases to scrub in over 25 hospitals and surgery centers allowing for specialization. • Case number requirements easily met during 2nd year. • (See website for case number total examples from current residents.) • 30% of time in the VA. • 70% of time in Private Practice.

Residency Rotations: Year 2 • Podiatric Surgery - 9 months • Alta View Hospital and SC • American Fork Hospital • Davis Surgery Center • Intermountain Medical Center and Surgery Center • Lakeview Hospital • LDS Hospital and Avenues Surgery Center • MckayDee Hospital and Surgery Center • Mountain West Surgery Center • Ogden Regional Medical Center • Orem Community Hospital • Riverton Hospital • Salt Lake Regional Hospital • Salt Lake Surgery Center • SLC VA Hospital • St Marks Hospital and 45th Street Surgery Center • St Marks Outpatient Surgery Center • Utah Valley Regional Medical and Surgical Center

  15. Residency Rotations: Year 2 • St. Mark’s Medicine Rotations – 10 weeks • In-patient Medicine/Family Practice Medicine • Pediatric Medicine/Behavioral Medicine • Pathology

  16. Residency Rotations: Year 3 • IMC/IHC Clinics Podiatry • VA Chief Podiatry Resident • Foot & Ankle Orthopedic Surgery, (exposure to IHC system). • St Marks Orthopedic/Podiatry Clinic, (exposure to Mountain Star system).

  17. Statistics • Cases – >1000 • Procedures - >2000 • Reconstructive Rearfoot & Ankle - >400 • % “C” Procedures – All 75%; RRA 73% • The Match: • All six positions matched 2011 • Several of current residents top of their class • Excellent job placement post residency
