  2. After the Civil War • The Civil War was the most costly war in American History in terms of total devastation. • At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000. • These casualties exceed the nation's loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam.

  4. Lincoln’s Plan for Reconstruction • Lincoln wanted to welcome back the southerners into the Union. • Even though Lincoln had freed the slaves, he did not wish to achieve political equality for them. • Goal was “to bind up the nations wounds…” • He never gets that chance…

  5. One More Loss:On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, in Ford's Theatre, while watching the play "Our American Cousin.” America mourned the loss of the man who upheld the Union. The funeral was seen my millions.

  6. The Escape: • After Booth murdered the President he cried out Sic Semper Tyrannis from the stage, which in Latin means “Thus ever for tyrants. • Does that saying sound familiar to you?

  8. President Johnson: Impeachment • After Lincoln was killed Andrew Johnson becomes President. • Johnson’s reconstruction plan is ridiculed by Radical Republicans as being too easy on the former Rebels. • Johnson is Impeached and comes one vote from being removed from office.

  9. The Radical Republicans Plan The Republicans, unlike Johnson, wanted to be very hard on the rebellious southern states. They organize the south up into 5 military districts each controlled by a former Civil War General.

  10. Carpetbaggers: Northerners who came south for economic reasons after the Civil War.

  11. 13th Amendment • Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction

  12. 14th Amendment • Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

  13. 15th Amendment • Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
