  2. Review from yesterday • 1. Which movie had a parent that was strict, rule-oriented, and orderly? • Answer: Sound of Music Captain Von Trapp • 2. Which movie had a parent that was respectful, caring, and encouraging? • 3. How would you describe the parent in the movie, Mrs. Doubtfire?

  3. Textbook: Children The Early Years • Objectives for today: • Clarify the differences between the three main parenting styles. • Discover how each parenting style affects a child • Get a textbook and turn to page 70 • Get your notebook out for note-taking

  4. Pre-Reading Question • What do we already know? • That there are 3 major parenting styles • That parents use these styles when parenting children • That the parenting styles seem very different • ????

  5. During Reading Questions • As we read the textbook, let’s ask ourselves some questions as we read • Such as: • Why is the information valuable? • When might I use this information? • What style do my parents follow? • What style do I want to follow?

  6. Reading • As I read aloud, please follow in your text and keep the questions in mind. • Let’s start at the heading “Parenting Styles” • Stop before “Permissive” • Let’s write down a few things we read.

  7. Note-taking • Strategies • You could make a “Bubble” map • Label one Authoritarian: • Write the characteristics of this style inside the bubble.

  8. Authoritarian Style Characteristics Wants children to be completely obedient Obedience is very important to learn Expect child to respect authority Little or no explanations given as to why to obey Likely to use physical punishment Seldom reward good behavior

  11. Finish the bubble map • Read the Permissive section and complete a joined bubble map as demonstrated. • Do the same with the Democratic section.

  12. After Reading: • Answer the following below your notes: • What are two things you didn’t know before the reading? • What style of parenting does your parent use? If they are different, write down both • How do you feel as a child growing up under this parenting style? • Which style was each of the movie clips???
