  1. Happy Friday, future leaders! • For today’s warm-up please do the following: • Grab your notebook and student log from the crates. • Draw an X through today’s homework box. • Write in today’s date and objective on your student log. • Open your notebook and respond to the following prompts: • Make effort, not excuses. Ancient Egyptian pyramids took a great deal of time and resources to build. Why would people go through all the trouble to construct one? What do you think their purpose was? Write one full paragraph. USE YOUR TIME WISELY!

  2. World History with Mr. Golden __________________________________________________________ Ancient Egypt – Pyramid Building

  3. Objective: ________________________________________________________ FLWBAT evaluate theories regarding the construction of Ancient Egyptian pyramids

  4. Agenda: ________________________________________________________ • Review • Monuments to your greatness! • Pyramid notes • Video – A Pharaoh to Remember • Exit ticket • - We’re done!

  5. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Pyramids ‘round the world:

  6. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Mexico!

  7. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Central America!

  8. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Africa!

  9. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ China!

  10. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ They’re EVERYWHERE!

  11. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ They’re EVERYWHERE! Maybe even… RIGHT BEHIND YOUUUUU! OMGRUNFORYOURLIFE!!!1!

  12. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ They’re EVERYWHERE! Maybe even… RIGHT BEHIND YOUUUUU! OMGRUNFORYOURLIFE!!!1!

  13. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Why pyramids? • To find out, we’re going to start today’s class with an epic task. • Use only the materials provided to build the largest structure • you can - (as a monument to your own greatness!) ?

  14. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Why pyramids? • Egyptian pyramids are made of stacked blocks – andnothing • else. No mortar, no cement, no nothing! Imagine stacking a • bunch of soda cans on top of each other with nothing holding • them together… What a mess! + =

  15. Pyramids: ________________________________________________________ Why pyramids? ! • Now imagine giving that stack of cans a wide, sturdy base… + = When you’ve got nothing to hold stuff together… Pyramids just make sense!

  16. Cornell Notes: ________________________________________________________ Notes/definitions go on the right side Keywords go on the left side

  17. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ What were the pyramids FOR? • Egyptian pyramids are tombs for dead Pharaohs • Though they may have also served astronomical • purposes, they’re basically enormous headstones =

  18. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ What’s on the inside? • Not much! Khufu’s pyramid – the largest one at • Giza (481 feet tall) – is a “spacious” two rooms • Why so cramped? In order to support the • enormous weight of the stones, the pyramids had • to be mostly solid The floorplan… The entrance…

  19. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ The floorplan…

  20. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ What are they made out of? • Huge blocks of stone quarried (cut) out of the • ground hundreds of miles away from the • building site • Khufu’s pyramid (the Great Pyramid) consists of • 2.5 million blocks– each averaging over 2.5 • tons (Some weigh as much as 150 tons!!!) Just for a frame of reference: 150 tons = 300,000 pounds! Sooooo… that’s a whole lot of that.

  21. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ X How were they built? • NOT by aliens. SORRY!

  22. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ If not aliens, then how? Let’s pause from our notetaking for a moment and seriously consider the task at hand… How would YOU do it?

  23. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ How were they built? • Here’s the fun part… WE HAVE NO IDEA • However, we do have theories – and the most • popular ones all involve ramps

  24. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: • The straight-on ramp • Problem: actually requires more materials to • makethe ramp than the pyramid!

  25. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: • The zig-zag ramp • Problem: pretty tough to maneuver massive • stone blocks around tight corners

  26. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: • The internal ramp • Problem: difficult to build the chambers inside • with a ramp running through the middle of them

  27. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: • The spiral ramp • The theory favored by most Egyptologists • because it uses the least additional materials of • any of the current ramp theories

  28. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ Just for fun… Enjoy this clip from Futurama’sA Pharaoh to Remember. REMEMBER ME!REMEMBER ME!

  29. Exit Ticket: ________________________________________________________ Use the all of today’s notes and handouts to answer the listed questions on the provided paper. Thank you for all your hard work today!

  30. We’re done! ________________________________________________________ Make sure to put your notebooks in the crate and your folders in folders, please! Thank you for all your hard work today!
