How important is the media? • Can you imagine a world without mobile phone, TV, newspapers, films, books? • A person watches 3.5 hours of TV every day. 25 hours per week; 1300 hours per year. • A person who lives 65 years, spends nearly 10 full years of his life watching TV.
How is Media Useful? • To inform, educate and communicate. • To form public opinion • An individual’s voice and opinion can be shared. • Can create social awareness like campaign against AIDS, Drugs and Smoking • It can become an agent of social change
The Negative Influences of Media • Media controls the Society • Distorts our idea of good looks and beauty • Who do you think is an ideal man/woman? • The media creates the ideal image of beautiful men and women and tells you what are the characteristics of a successful person. It tells you that if youare not like them you are not cool and so you should look like them.
You get very confusing messages • Media says being fat is bad. But at the same time there are several thousands of advertisements of junk food that result in a person gaining fat. • They create so much of insecurity among children
In media often women are presented as objects for man’s pleasure.
Media’s Influence on Women • Low self-esteem • Depression • Eating disorders • Anorexia- Lack of appetite • Bulimia- Self –induced vomiting to prevent weight gain • Increased violence towards women • Dissatisfaction • Embarrassment • Harmful Gender Role • Negative Gender stereotypes
In the Case of Young Men • Media affects the self-esteem and actions of boys by creating stereotypes that make them to live up to. • They idolize Superman, Spiderman and Batman • The message is, “Be strong and powerful.” • The ideal body image projected is, “tall, muscular, dark, strong, perfect.” • So much of violence associated- gun, bombs, physical violence etc.
It is money that drives media. • They want to ensure that people buy more and more.
Media’s value is instant gratification • I want money FATAFAT • I want success FATAFAT • I want love FATAFAT
The TV Influence • Why is TV called “Idiot Box?” • Why are excessive TV viewers called “couch potatoes?’”
Media is instrumental in promoting violence • WWE Channel • Have you heard of kids brining guns to school? • Last year’s incident of student killing teacher at a Chennai school. • Video games that involve so much of violence
Trial by Media • Media behaves acting like policemen, judge, prosecutor. • Trial by Media before a case goes to the court.
Media Creates Role Models for us • Both positive and negative role models • Who is a positive role model? • A person we can look up to and admire • A person who provides motivation and inspiration • A person with high self-esteem • One who handles stress positively • A trust-worthy person • Integrity of character • Perseverance • Respect for others

What should we do? • Do not allow ourselves to be deceived by what others dictate • We need to use our brain to decide what we want to do and what we want to become
What should we do? • Do not allow TV, Internet and Mobile to control you. • Begin to ask the question WHY • Use media responsibly. • Do not be a videogame, mobile phone or internet addict.
What should we do? • Use time in study- prepare a timetable for you • Play games that involve physical activity, instead of computer games • Spend quality time with your family members in mutually interesting hobbies, activities that involve talking, sharing and emoting. • Spend time with nature.
