  4. The Good Samaritan 25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 26"What is written in the law?" he asked him. "How do you read it?" 27He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind;" and "your neighbor as yourself." 28"You've answered correctly," he told him. "Do this and you will live.“ 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:25-37

  5. The Good Samaritan 30Jesus took up the question and said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead.31A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side.32In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.34He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, Luke 10:25-37

  6. The Good Samaritan brought him to an inn, and took care of him.35The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him. When I come back I'll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’ 36"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?“ 37 "The one who showed mercy to him," he said. Then Jesus told him, "Go and do the same.“ Luke 10:25-37

  7. The Good Samaritan 25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Luke 10:25-37 What event preceded this passage that prompted the Lawyer to ask this question? (10:20)

  8. The Good Samaritan 25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Luke 10:25-37 Was this a sincere question sincere from the Lawyer? (10:25)

  9. The Good Samaritan 25Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?“ 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:25-37 This was an intense moment; the Lawyer wanted to test the Teacher and justify himself.

  10. The Good Samaritan 26"What is written in the law?"he asked him. "How do you read it?" How did Jesus answer the Lawyer’s question? (10:26) Luke 10:25-37 Why did Jesus ask the Lawyer questions about the Law?

  11. The Good Samaritan 26"What is written in the law?"he asked him. "How do you read it?" How did the Lawyer answer Jesus? Luke 10:25-37

  12. The Good Samaritan 27He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind;" and "your neighbor as yourself.“ 28"You've answered correctly," he told him. Luke 10:25-37 Did the Lawyer answer correctly? Deuteronomy 6:5 Part of the Shema, recited twice daily Did Jesus think he answered correctly? Leviticus 19:18

  13. The Good Samaritan 28"You've answered correctly," he told him. "Do this and you will live.“ What then did Jesus tell the Lawyer to do? Luke 10:25-37 What would have been an appropriate response to Jesus? How did the Lawyer respond to Jesus?

  14. The Good Samaritan 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Why did the Lawyer ask Jesus this question? Luke 10:25-37 How did Jesus answer the Lawyer?

  15. The Good Samaritan 30Jesus took up the question and said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. Luke 10:25-37 The dangerous road from Jerusalem to Jericho descends ~3,000 feet in 17 miles and robbers often hid along the road.

  16. The Good Samaritan • One who is expected to love others • Avoided the wounded man on the road • Descendants of Levi but not of Aaron • Assisted priests in the temple • Also avoided the wounded man • Mixed Jewish and Gentile ancestry • Scorned by Jews • Not seen as neighbors • Helped the man and paid his expenses 36"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?“ Priest Levite Samaritan Luke 10:25-37 Jesus inverted the Lawyer’s definition of neighbor. He changed it from a noun to a verb!

  17. The Good Samaritan 36"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?“ 37 "The one who showed mercy to him," he said. Then Jesus told him, "Go and do the same.“ Luke 10:25-37 The Greek word (poiei)in this context implies continuous action.

  18. Deliberate Discipleship Who are your neighbors and how will you demonstrate your love for God by loving them this week? Love for God expresses itself in a life that is sensitive to others. We are to see others as God sees them and we are to act toward them as He does. Neighbors can come from surprising places, the real issue is not whom we should serve, but that we serve. We are not to ask who our neighbor is; we are to be a neighbor by the way we act toward them.
