Important Vocabulary • Consumer- Anyone who purchases products or services • Media- Various methods for communicating information • Advertising- Sending out messages designed to interest consumers in buying a product or service • Comparison Shopping- Method of judging the benefits of different products or services by comparing several factors, such as quality, features, and cost

  3. I know… More Vocabulary… • Warranty- A written promise to handle repairs if the product fails to work properly • Health Advocacy- Taking action to influence others to address a health-related concern or to support a health related belief • Online Shopping- Using the internet to buy products and services

How Does Advertising Work? • Companies use a variety of ways to advertise. • The various ways include the type of medium and style of the method of the advertisements. • Method Examples • Buzz Marketing • Rich and Famous • Good Times • Incentives • Testimonial • Competitor Bashing • Recognizable Spokesperson • Humor • Sex Appeal • Medium Examples • Television, Internet, Periodicals, Billboards, Radio

BUZZ Marketing • Also called Word of Mouth marketing. • Sponsored Educational Material • “Kraft” healthy food guides, Coca-Cola score boards • Advertising in Classrooms • Exclusive Deals with Fast Food or Soft Drink Companies • Branding the Students • Providing clothing for students to show it off (typically popular students or those who are being marketed)

Rich & Famous • Theme: • Product will make you feel rich and famous through its association with glamour, elegance, and money. • Lebron Samsung Galaxy Elizabeth Rosemond "Liz" Taylor, (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011) was a British-Americanactress. From her early years as a child star with MGM, she became one of the great screen actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age. As one of the world's most famous film stars, Taylor was recognized for her acting ability and for her glamorous lifestyle, beauty and distinctive violet eyes.

  7. Good Times • Theme: • This product will add fun to your life and you will enjoy it as much as those in the advertisement. Bud Light 2011 Super Bowl

  8. Humor • Theme: • An advertisement that gets the consumers attention through comedy. Advertisers believe you will remember the product because it is funny, and that because you like the ad, you will like the product.   9. Sex Appeal • Theme: • A commercial that focuses on an attractive person or sex appeal to sell the product or service. Advertisers hope the attractive person will get the consumer’s attention. Axe Effect Axe Effect Abercrombie

  10. Recognizable Spokesperson • Theme: • A commercial that uses a spokesperson that is associated with the product. Advertisers believe you will like and use the product because you like and remember the spokesperson.   11. Competitor Bashing • Theme: • An advertisement that portrays the competition in a negative way. “Don’t use the competitor’s product, use ours instead.” Largely used in politics. Subway at&t vs. Verizon Best Buy - Buy Back (Bashing the technology industry to “sympathize”)

Testimonial • Theme: • You can relate the those in the ad by using the product. • Utilizes famous people or those with “desirable” traits/qualities (models). • “Because Brad Pitt likes it, I should like it too.” http://www.proactive.com JLO Venus Razors Sony – Timberlake & Manning Sony – T&M, 3D Movies

  13. Incentives • Theme: • The Advertisers offer you rewards such as free merchandise and coupons in an effort to get you hooked to their product or “suckered” into buying it. • Free Shipping on large orders! McDonald’s Monopoly Buy one, Get one FREE Even Credit card companies have to advertise, and will use incentives to get you to buy in. (Just be sure to read the fine print).

  14. Review • What forms of marketing and media are out there? Are there ones we did not discuss? • What do you think is the most commonly used one? Which is the most effective? • How can you be an educated consumer? • Do you know the difference between a commercial and an article? Take a look at a magazine.
