  3. Early Cultures • ~ 5000 BCE moved from a nomadic hunter gatherer culture to a agricultural. • ~3500 BCE came the Megalith architecture (demonstrated a sense of science and mathematic skills)

  4. Classical Greece • Civilization based on trade and expansion! • The Illiad and the Odyssey based on the Trojan war that Greece won TOLD by Homer. • Used as a basic textbook of classical Greek history and culture

  5. Classical Greece • ~400 BCE Democracy hits Athens • City states developed called “Polis” • Each polis contained an “Acropolis” which were public monuments/Temples dedicated to the Gods.

  6. Classical Greece • Each Polis held Olympic games honoring the Greek God “Zeus” • 1st recorded date of Olympic games ~776 BCE

  7. Early Events • Running Events • Stadion – 600 ft. (182 meters) • Dialous – 400 ft. (121 meters) • Dolichos – 1400 ft. ( 426 meters) “Long Distance”

  13. What is Philosophy? • Personal Philosophy • "philosophy is a system for guiding life and conduct" • An example "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" , "There is a sucker born every minute" • What is your personal philosophy ?

  14. Classical Greece • Socrates • Created the “Socratic Method” • Would ask a series of questions, and continue the questioning until the listener either contradicted themselves or could no longer answer.

  16. Classical Greece • Plato • Believed nothing material ever remains the same. • To gain knowledge do not look at the material world, look at universal truths. These are called IDEAS!

  17. Classical Greece • Aristotle • Studied and believed that the best government lay somewhere between a gov’t by a few and a democracy! (Oligarchy)
