  2. Objective This is going to be a fun activity to learn about the ‘49ers and what they did in California during the Gold Rush. You’re going to learn about who the ’49ers were. You’re going to learn about what the ’49ers wore to dig for gold. You’re going to learn about what the ’49ers used to dig with. You’re going to learn about where at in California the ‘49ers dug.

  3. What do you want to learn first? Reminder: Do all of the sections before taking the quiz • LOCATIONS! • Where on Earth did they find all that gold? • TOOLS! • What could they possibly have used to find the gold? • CLOTHES! • What kind of clothes did the ‘49ers wear?

  4. LOCATIONS! The ‘49ers went to many places in California in search for gold. The gold diggers searched for gold in many different locations, some including: * Rivers- This is where gold was first found. It was normally in the dirt and it blended in with the rocks. * Creeks- After the river ended, the creeks would be smaller and easier for the people to search for the gold. * Mountains- Some of the gold diggers had much luck digging into the side of the mountains, but others did not. *Valleys- In uncolonized areas, people would just start digging into the earth, hoping to find their gold. * Mines- After digging so far into the ground or in the side of a mountain, the people would take dynamite and make mines to dig even further.

  6. TOOLS! In order to find gold, the ‘49ers had to use many different tools to find the gold The gold diggers had to use different tools depending on where they were at, these tools included: * Shovels- Shovels were most common and are still popular today in order to dig into the earth. * Dynamite- Dynamite was most common to blow big openings into the earth. * Hoes- These were used to move around the dirt on the surface of the ground. * Water sifter- This was one of the most common tools because the gold diggers had to have them in order to separate the gold from dirt in the water.

  8. CLOTHES! Since the gold diggers were outside digging for gold, they had to have decent clothing. Depending on where and when the gold diggers were outside, they had to have certain kinds of clothing. Some of the clothes that they used were: * Heavy jeans- to protect their skin from getting torn up * Hat- to protect their heads from being hurt * Boots- to protect their feet and lower legs from getting cut * Thick layers- to be protected from the heat and or water * Gloves- to protect their hands when using tools

Water, Hills, Land, etc. What kind of clothing did the gold diggers use to dig in? Think about what outside workers today use but with variations. Jeans, Hats, Shoes, etc. What kind of tools did the gold diggers use to dig? Think about the kind of tools that are used today when working with land. Shovels, Hoes, etc. Now let’s take the quiz!
