  2. 2 main categories of image types- Raster or Vector • Raster Images created using Photoshop, Paint shop Pro etc. Photographic/Art styled images best suited to this format. Jpeg, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TGA most common. Poor for rescaling or logos etc. • Vector images created using Illustrator, Flash etc. Line based illustrative art. Mathematically processed so can scale to any size without loosing quality. • Specific Jobs make choosing the type of graphic important. Raster Vector Image Types Introduction Raster Vector

  3. Raster Images are made of individual pixels. • Rescaling produces pixelation so you need to create the file in the size it is intended. • You can scale down but should never scale up. Scaling up leads to pixelation as the graphics software guesses what should be in the space. • Typically used for photos, artworks, collages and highly detailed work. • BMP, JPEG, TGA, GIF, PNG and TIFF PSD are the most commonly used formats. Raster Images

  4. When to use certain file types. • BMP/TIFF- format that is lossless. Use this when file size is not a concern and you need to keep quality as high as possible. Not for the web- print. • PNG Lossless but keeps files sizes smaller. Use this for high quality web based images. Larger than… • Jpeg- Lossy format. The more compression the less the quality BUT the smaller file size. Common image type for web. The more times you edit and save as JPEG the less quality • TGA- Lossless but contains an extra channel – the Alpha channel for opacity., Commonly used in 3d games and 3d animation. • PSD- Photoshop generic file that will save all layers and effects etc. Loosless and should always be saved as your Source file for images. Raster Images- File Types

  5. Raster Images are made of mathematical equations. • Rescales perfectly. Great for logos/livery etc. • Typically used for more diagramtic, illustrative work • Extremely clean and precise graphics and a VERY small file size. • Flash uses this as the vasis for small animation online. • Illustrator key programme used for creating this file type though many opther programmes do too. Vector Images

  6. Typically they are EPS or AI format and are generally interchangeable between programmes quit easily. • SWF and FLA files are created using Flash. These are animated vector graphics. Small files size for very complex animation. • AI and EPS file types are ussually saved as PNG for viewing on the web as PNG has capabilities beyond jpg fopr converting vector to raster and displaying them cleanly. • PNG is the new JPEG!
