  2. HISTORY The massive stair case was originally constructed in 1635

  3. HISTORY Built in the last years of Samuel De Champlain founder of Quebec city

  4. The stairway is the oldest in Quebec city

  5. Background Information In 1835 the old wooden stairway was replaced by an iron one, also known as the breakneck steps

  6. Located in the heart of Quebec city, these old steps have been around since 1635

  7. The stairs descend to du petit Champlain

  8. Architecture • 1893 design by city architect and engineer Charles Baillairgé

  9. There are 170 total steps built on the original 17th century stairway that linked the Upper Town and Lower Town. There are various shops and restaurants on different levels of the stairs
