  3. Discussion • On a separate sheet (no name) • What are two “misdeeds” or favorite teacher torture techniques while in school? Preferably, one or both must be from PE.

  4. Student misbehavior is the #1reason teachers leave the profession!

  5. WHY A CHALLENGE EXISTS • Increase in disruptive behavior • Factors . . . (don’t peak) • Lack of education in promoting responsible behavior . . .

  6. Possible Factors • Poor parenting • Decay in family structure and values • Anonymity in large communities and schools • Loss of the influence of elders on youngsters • Psychological disturbances • Media (TV, internet, music)/Popular culture • Exposure to societal violence • Failure of the juvenile justice system • Poverty • Romantic breakups • Boredom • Racial tensions • Inability to handle frustration/stress • Drugs and alcohol • Many others

  7. SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT • 1 out of every 20 preschoolers in the U.S. will commit a serious crime before adulthood (Cain, 2004). • Lack of discipline and uncooperative students. • Lack of behavior management skills in teachers.

  10. What to do? • Behavior management comes naturally for some but most teachers must be taught: • Learning environment • Safe, structured, consistent & motivating • Design, implement & evaluate program • Learn how to use methods that will redirect inappropriate behavior

Teaching Behavior Management • It Can Be Done • Safe – do students feel safe? • Structure – adequate planning/organization • 80% of problems eliminated through positive & proactive behavior management (BM) • Consistent: same action = same result • Motivating – give students a reason Without control, you have nothing

  12. Benefits • Increased learning • Increased time on task • Better perception of PE & PA • Increased teacher satisfaction • Increased safety • Increased social skills/responsibility

  13. Resources for Assistance in BM • Ask fellow teachers for their suggestions • Online – plenty of good websites • PE 299 materials • Have a mentor

  14. Behavior Mngt Toolbox • You should have as many “tools” as possible • Different students may require different approaches • Different classes may require different approaches • Must shift between strategies
