Introduction The celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi take place every year for marking the birth of Lord Ganesh, known as the God of beginnings in Hindu mythology. Historical Background According to legend, Ganesh was made out of sandalwood paste by Goddess Parvathi who put him on guard when she went to take a bath. Lord Shiva, upon his return, would not be allowed to pass through by the obedient child. Angered at this behavior, Lord Shiva immediately severed the little one’s head. Goddess Parvathi came to know of this and was left heartbroken, leading her husband to promise that he would resurrect Ganesh. His followers were sent out with instructions to bring back a child’s head but all that they could find was the head of a baby elephant. That led to the rebirth of Lord Ganesh with the head of an elephant.
