  1. Is Homework Good Or Bad For The Student?

  2. Homework essays and assignments are assigned to the students of schools and colleges. Homework is considered as an essential part of learning by most professors as well as parents. Most professors insist that solving assignments or homework problems is a fundamental way to reinforce what the children are taught in school. However, several studies have raised some pertinent questions on the benefits of homework. Is homework really worth the hassle? Well, the answer isn’t black and white per se.

  3. In a recent survey, BBC questioned the benefits of homework given in schools. Several education specialists have explored the effects of homework on students and concluded that too much homework increases stress and anxiety in young adults. However, studies also suggest that homework encourages independent learning and helps students develop ‘deep understanding’ of concepts. Let us now analyze the merits and demerits of homework in young adults.

  4. Advantages of Homework 1- Homework improves the performance of students Studies reveal that homework enhances student’s achievements in terms of test results, grades and likelihood to attend college. A test showed that students who were assigned homework in classes outperformed 69% of the students who didn’t have homework. 2-Homework reinforces learning and develops good study habits Students generally retain only 50% of the information that is taught in class. It becomes essential to recapitulate that information to truly learn it for a lifetime and homework aids in this process. A study done by the City University of New York showed that written assignments like homework, essays, projects, etc. encourage students to develop certain lifetime skills(goal setting, time management and improved concentration).

  5. 3-Homework allows parents to get involved in their child’s coursework The take-home assignments give the parents an opportunity to access their child’s progress in school. Homework also gives the parents an insight into the progress of a special needs child, and thus allowing them to adjust their learning strategies as per the child’s needs.

  6. Disadvantages of Homework 1-Too much homework can result in stress and anxiety In a poll conducted among high school students of California, 82% of the students agreed that homework was the greatest source of stress and anxiety. High achieving students also said that homework pressure even leads to sleep deprivation and other health problems like headache, exhaustion, stomach problems and weight loss.

  7. 2-Low income students who do not get equal opportunity might feel demotivated A study in Hispanic Heritage Foundation showed that over 96% of students needed internet access to complete homework but couldn’t due to lack of access to a computer. Homework increases social inequality as it provides advantages to the privileged students while further demotivating the students that hail from marginalised economic background.

  8. 3-The burden of homework can lead the child to take false measures to complete homework Once homework becomes a burden, students often ask parents, friends or other freelancers to complete their task for them. One can never ascertain that the pupil themselves have done it. Research has also confirmed that parents often complete their child homework the night before the deadline. This is counterproductive to the growth of the student. To sum up, while homework may be beneficial for a child, excessive homework pressure might stress the kid out and make them dread academic tasks throughout their lifetime.
