  2. History • Founded in 1546 by King Henry VIII, the Royal Navy has been working for almost half a century to ensure the safety and protection of the United Kingdom and its allies.  • With the headquarters based in Portsmouth, the Navy is the essence of the British Military.  • Portsmouth is the oldest Naval Base, built over 800 years ago and at one time, it was the largest industrial site in the world. The base is the headquarters for two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface fleet, and employs up to 17,200 people. Portsmouth is currently the home to three of the most prestigious ships, HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and the Mary Rose.
