Color and Balance: Elements and Principles of Art, Color Theory Pretest, and Notes

This unit focuses on understanding the elements and principles of art, as well as color theory. Students will participate in activities, complete a pretest, and take notes to develop their understanding of color and balance in artwork.

  1. 01.06.15Unit 4: Color and Balance Grab your sketchbook and answer the Do Now below in your Sketchbook: 1.) What are the 7 elements of art and 9 principles of design? 2.) What projects did we do last semester that helped us develop the elements and principles in our artwork?

  3. Technology Policy • No phones until after permission is given. • When you walk in, please put your phone away and have your earphones out. If I hear music especially when it’s discussion time, I will take away your phone and headphones. • After permission is given, you may have your phone out for the duration of the class.

  13. Color Theory Pre-Test (30 min.) Color in the color wheel with your medium of choice. Fill out the front and the back. TRY YOUR BEST. It’s for a completion grade. Bring to Ms. Zhang at her desk when complete and return all materials. REMEMBER. NO TALKING because it’s a pre-test but you may listen to music.

Color Theory Notes • If you know something, please raise your hand so I know whether to go over something more or less depending on how much people know. • Fill out notes according to chart on the side board. • ONLY Fill out notes today. Mix paint and add color to notes next class. • Take out headphones.

Color Theory Notes (Sketchbook) • Hue – the name of a color • intensity - the brightness and purity of a color • the more black or white you add, the duller/fainter the color becomes • Shade – color plus black • Tint – color plus white • monochromatic - all the tints, tones, and shades of a single hue

  17. Split complementary – uses the two colors on either side of the complement of a color (imagine a y on the color wheel) ex. Red, blue-green, and yellow-green

  18. Triadic colors – 3 colors that are evenly spaced on the color wheel

CFU (need raffle passer) • What are the primary colors? • Why are the primary colors so important? • What are the secondary colors? • What two colors do you mix together to get purple? • How do you get the tertiary colors? • What are complementary colors and give an example? • What happens do the intensity of a color when you add black or white? • Is pink a tint or a shade of red? • Give an example of a triadic color scheme. • Give an example of a split-complementary color scheme. • What is a monochromatic color scheme?

  21. Clean Up • Make sure you return markers, color sticks, crayons, etc. if you haven’t. • Keep your handout in your sketchbook. You’ll need it on Thursday.
