  1. Argument: Saving Energy at Southside

  2. #1 • Using info from the passage, what words are represented in the committee name MC2? • More Conservation Committee • More Conscious Conservation • Maintain Central Conservation • My Conservation Committee

  3. 2 • What does the writer suggest that the club should do to convey its message? • Use various types of communication • Use the internet for communication only • Use a school wide poster contest • Produce tv and radio ads

  4. 3 • What strategies does the author use to develop the essay’s argument? • Sets a goal the audience can reach and sets steps how to reach it. • Shows the weaknesses of the other programs that came before the MC group. • Relates Stories of previous experiences in fighting pollution. • Uses testimonials from other schools that have done similar things.

  5. 4 • Briefly the writer proposes ways to… • End global warming • Control the power plants • Personally make a difference • Get government help

  6. 5—Constructed Response • Which paragraph from the argumentative essay is the weakest, and least developed? • What could you add to it, to help with the development? • Write in complete sentences.

  7. Every paragraph should have: • A topic sentence or thesis • 3-4 supporting details that prove that thesis or topic sentence • A conclusion sentence • The conclusion sentence makes a COMMENT about all the supporting details. It shows the reader what they should realize after reading those details (evidence, support).

  8. Full Paragraph Example Mr. Crady often becomes frustrated when his students don’t give their best effort in class. Often, he will yell when students don’t get to work quickly, aren’t paying attention to what he is saying, or are working on things other than what he wants them to work on. He will yell somewhere between a level of 6-15. He will ask someone to close the door as a sign his frustration is mounting. His frustration is due to his knowing they are capable of doing well on things.

  9. This movie is an insult to the intelligence of the audience. We are supposed to accept one improbability after another: that the hero, a private detective, is willing to take on the case out of the goodness of his heart; that the police are willing to freely share with him information on a case still under investigation; that the villain just happens to be the man who killed his parents when he was a boy. And of course the key witness turns out to be a leggy, rich, and unattached blonde who is wildly attracted to the detective.

  10. So how to improve your paragraphs • Make sure you use enough support. • Make comments about the support you use. Lead the reader to the same understandings you have. • Improve the quality and variety of word choice within your paragraph. • Think about what quotes, sayings, stories, could add to your argument in the paragraph. • Use strong imagery (even though it isn’t a story, readers like imagery.) • Sentence stems: for all these reasons, as already mentioned, Because of these things, Doesn’t this show.. • Be sure all parts of paragraph are present.

  11. Kids shouldn’t be allowed to wear what they want to school. Kids make bad decisions everyday. They were inappropriate clothes. They would just pick the most revealing thing and wear it.
