All other smaller cracks can be repaired effectively, but there is no undoing for a web crack. Removal of the Older Screen The process starts with dismounting the damaged screen to make room for the new one. All clips are taken off and the glass is then separated from the pinch-weld setting with the help of a cold knife or similar tool. The urethane surrounding it which is the polymer adhesive used to secure the glass in place are then cut and scraped out without as much of a scratch on the polished external façade of the car. At last, the glass is dislodged from its holding and slowly carried away for disposal. Preparation of the Pinch-Weld All visible dirt from the surface of the pinch-weld is cleaned off with the use of brush and water. When all contaminants including the residual adhesive is cleansed, the excess urethane is then shaves off in places with the help of a razor. Rusty areas on the frame are sanded and taped for masking. Now, the panel is brushed with adhesive primer for the glass to sit in. Setting Up of the New Screen The adhesive which is applied in the panel is then applied on the frit band of the glass. New urethane is applied with the help of electric caulking guns. The new glass is then placed on top of the panel with the help of a vacuum holder. This requires more than just a pair of hands. A little tremble of the hands can cause the entire work to get mucked up at this stage. Servicemen with the steady hands only are assigned to take over for this last stage. The glass is set on top of the casing without the fingers coming in contact with the frit band. It takes a while for the urethane to set in and that’s why, most windshield repair centers in Guelph, Ontario require to keep the car on standby for a few hours for drying.
