  28. Key points from 2007 specification • The only external assessment is through National Standards Sampling • Most units are 60 guided learning hours – but be aware of some variety; eg: Unit 6: Application, Exploration & Realisation consists of 120 guided learning hours • Some level 2 and 4 units – but they achieve the same points when grading All units for Art & Design are level 3, however it is possible to import level 2 and 4 units • Unit achievement points system changed to: • Pass = 6 • Merit = 12 • Distinction = 18 • Award/Certificate/Diploma nesting

  37. Planning the course structure These are some of the key elements you should consider: • Time frame • The staff team • Resources • Practical Session timetabling • Workshop / practical resource management • Programme content • Programme delivery • Assessment and quality assurance

  38. Time frame • BTEC National Award: 360 glh • BTEC National Certificate: 720 glh • BTEC National Diploma consists of 1080 glh. • Centres are at liberty to establish the length of time they allocate to the delivery of the programme. • Integrated approach or intensive unit delivery depending on content and team preferences. • Time for planning, assessment, tutorials, evaluation and quality processes (IV and standardisation) should be built into the delivery strategy.

  39. The staff team • Clarify the hierarchy of team management • Identify subject and pathway specialists • Agree individual and team responsibility to support programme planning • Agree a common approach for recording information • Allocate appropriate skills and time to deliver each unit • Identify appropriate Assessors and Internal Verifiers • Establish IV and standardisation procedures.

  40. Resources • Requirements are stated in the specification • Indicate the level of resource required in terms of staff and physical resources • Ensure staff are familiar with current professional practice within each specialist area • Additional specialist practitioners may also contribute to the programme • A range of current resource material to support the programme eg visits, textbooks, videos, magazines, journals, other publications and websites are essential.

  41. Work experience timetabling Provides: • Focus for core units • Introductory practical sessions in specialist areas • Access to specialist facilities: design studios and workshops • Opportunities for individual study and independent learning

  42. Work experience • Considerations for health, safety and environmental issues • Awareness of legislation within vocational practice • Essential induction into industry practice • Design of space appropriate to activities • Sufficient resources to meet the number of learners

  43. Arranging work experience placements • Research local work places in the sector • Contact your sector skills council for advice or for information about local business • Market the benefits to local business of taking on learners for work experience • Arrange an open day?

  44. Programme planning and delivery (1) • A structured programme of delivery for the whole course • Timetabling access to workshops and other resources, in terms of staff and physical resources • Integrated unit delivery through assignments is advised and tracked at criterion level • Clear guidance on specialist options

  45. Programme Planning and Delivery (2) Learning activities to aid learner achievement Feedback on progress and development timetabled throughout programme Assignments appropriate to level and stages of development Assignments to address unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria

  46. Programme Planning and Delivery (3) • Teaching and learning linking knowledge, skills and understanding of the vocational programme • Links between theory and practice • Assessment plan: • Interim assessment tutorials at criterion level • Major portfolio assessments at unit level • Peer and self assessment; crits; tutorials

  47. Assessment of BTEC Nationals All units are • Internally assessed using centre devised assignments • Internally verified (IV) and, where appropriate, standardised • Subject to external verification (EV) through National Standards Sampling (NSS)

  48. What does an assignment need to do? • Meet the requirements of the grading criteria • Support learning • Motivate learners • Allow the creation of assessable evidence

  49. Designing an assignment - 1 Ensure the assignment has: • accurate unit details • accurate programme details • clear deadlines for assessment • shows all relevant grading criteria for the unit(s) • indicates relevant grading criteria targeted against each task

  50. Designing an assignment - 2 Ensure the assignment: • clearly states what evidence the learner needs to provide • is likely to generate evidence which is appropriate and sufficient • is set at the appropriate level • has a time period of appropriate duration • uses suitable vocational language • has a clear presentation format
