  2. Great Fathers Male emperor penguins are often recognized as some of the animal kingdom’s best fathers. They fast up to 100 days while incubating the eggs, while the females return to the sea to feed. • What qualities characterize a great earthly father? • What positive impact did your father have on your life that he might not know about? • In what ways do positive and negative images of earthly fathers impact one’s idea of Yahweh our Father? 2

  3. Yahweh Our Father 3 Last week, we focused on God’s personal name, Yahweh, which communicates His sovereignty and power as a faithful covenant keeper. Today, our focus is on Yahweh as Father and we shall see that His love for us is undeserved, unequaled, and unceasing.

  4. The Father’sUndeserved Love Psalm 103:2-6 • What do you remember about David’s story, specifically about his shortcomings? • How can a man who experienced some of the deepest sorrow and sin still sing things like this about God? • Do you think David was aware of how undeserving he was of God’s love in this passage? 4 2My soul, praise the LORD, and do not forget all His benefits. 3He forgives all your sin; He heals all your diseases. 4He redeems your life from the Pit; He crowns you with faithful love and compassion. 5He satisfies you with goodness; your youth is renewed like the eagle. 6The LORD executes acts of righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.

  5. Undeserved Love 5 God graciously provides marvelous benefits for His people, the chief of which is His undeserved love. Clearly, one of the greatest expressions of undeserved love is found in freely offered forgiveness – God to us and us to others. And, this particular expression is most commonly found in the parent-child relationship. Yahweh our Father, unlike us, will never stop forgiving, which is a trait that highlights His unequaled love.

  6. The Father’sUnequaled Love Psalm 103:8-12 God’s love is greater than our sins against Him; and when we repent, He grants complete forgiveness. If God DID deal with us “as our sins deserve,” what would that look like? What does it mean that He has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west? 8The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and rich in faithful love. 9He will not always accuse us or be angry forever. 10He has not dealt with us as our sins deserve or repaid us according to our offenses. 11For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His faithful love toward those who fear Him. 12As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

  7. Forgetful God? God’s grace, compassion, and patience towards us sets His love apart. As much as we love our own children, even that love does not compare with our Heavenly Father’s love for us. Not only is this love expressed most vividly in forgiveness, but it is a love that will never end. 7 A common teaching about God’s view towards our sin is that He totally forgets it. But a perfect God doesn’t forget anything. Instead, God chooses not to remember. In addition to Psalm 103, consider these Scriptural truths: When I confess my sins, God puts them at the bottom of the sea. (Mic. 7:19) Once forgiven, we are no longer slaves to sin. (Rom. 6:18) God keeps not record of our sins. (1 Cor. 13:5) God’s forgiveness is once and for all time. (Heb. 10:10) Jesus’ mission was to come and take away my sin. (John 1:29)

  8. The Father’sUnceasing Love Psalm 103:13,17-18 • David compared God with a compassionate father. One who feels for us and with us and relates to us in love. • In this way, God presents a superb example for human fathers to following in relating to our children. • The Father’s compassionate love toward His children never ceases. People who revere God and keep His covenants experience the full benefits of His love for eternity. 8 13As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. 17But from eternity to eternity the LORD’s faithful love is toward those who fear Him, and His righteousness toward the grandchildren 18of those who keep His covenant, who remember to observe His precepts.

  9. Yahweh Our Father 9 No matter what kind of father we have, no matter the mistakes we’ve already made, or the wonderful things we think we’ve done as parents, there is no expression of love greater than God the Father’s. He is the ultimate Father, perfect in every way, with a love that is undeserved, never ends, and is by those definitions unequaled. How can we not pursue the One who freely gives this love?
