Finland • In 1155 King St.Erik of Sweden, made Finland a dominion of his kingdom. • 200 years ago Finland was a part of the mainland of the Swedish Kingdom and Åbo was its capital. • 100 years ago Finland was a part of Russia. In 1812, after the 1808-1809 war between Sweden and Russia (and many other European powers) the territory of Finland was lost to Russia and the capital was moved from Åbo to Helsinki. • Independent 6.12.1917

  3. Åbo - Turku • Åbo is the oldest city in Finland. In 2009 Åbo celebrated her 780th birthday. • The Swedish name Åbo refers to the first settlers by the river, "å". • The Finnish name Turku probably originates from a Slavic word "turg" - meaning a market place. • The position of Åbo as a spiritual center, was strengthened in 1229 when Pope Gregorius IX gave his consent to moving the Bishop of Finland’s seat to a new location further down the river Aura. This is the date from which the age of the city of Åbo is counted. • The construction of a simple stone church had already begun in 1250 on a hill called Unikankare near the river. In the year 1300 the Cathedral of Åbo was consecrated.

  6. The Master’s degree • Master’s degree, 120 credits. The studies leading to the higher university degree may include: • Basic-, intermediate- and advanced studies; • language and communication studies; • interdisciplinary studies; • other studies; and • relevant internship

  7. Limited study time The university decree stipulates that the Master’s degree should be completed in two years. Students may exceed this time with two years In addition students can register as absent for 4 terms (two academic years).   11. Registration for first year students • When? 29 August – 9 September 2011 • Where? Gripen, Tavastgatan 13, 2nd floor. • Bring original degree certificates for inspection, as well as a receipt of payment of the student union membership fee • Remember to register in the beginning of each academic year! (August – mid-September) • Registration forms are sent by regular mail to all students during the summer – always inform us about your correct address: www.abo.fi/aa/adress or studinfo@abo.fi • Note that different deadlines apply for second-year students • Information about registration procedures are published on the internet in June.

  12. MinPlan • Electronic study advising system • Course registration • Registration for examinations • Individual study plans • An approved study plan is required of students when they register in the beginning of each academic year. • More information in the next session!

  13. Individual study plans • All students are required to make a study plan and the study plan must be approved by the department. • Degree students complete their study plans in MinPlan with the help of their teacher tutor. • You can also ask your tutor to help you with MinPlan

  14. JOO-agreement An agreement on the right to take courses at other Finnish universities. The courses may be subject to fees which the home university must pay. Examinations Register according to the instructions (7–10 days in advance), MinPlan No set examination periods A course examination can consist of one or more parts: Written examination, essay, other course work Last day of the course / Specific examination day / General examination day Usually two possibilities to retake the examination Before attending an examination, find out about how the examination is carried out, and what rules apply. Make sure that you understand the rules. If you are unsure, discuss with your teacher or other staff before the examination.

  19. Facts regarding examinations • Register as instructed! • Be on time! You are not allowed to enter the examination room after the examination has begun. • If you need to leave the room temporarily during the examination, you must have the permission of the person supervising the examination • you may not leave the examination until half an hour (in some cases 1 hour) has passed from the beginning of the examination • no books, notes or other materials are allowed • talking to other students is strictly forbidden • copying answers from other students is strictly forbidden during the examination • please ask the teacher for advice if you are unsure of the rules!

Facts regarding essays: essays are individual work and they should not be copied from other students or from the Internet essays should always have references to works consulted and/or quoted, with a bibliography at the end. All forms of plagiarism, e.g. copying from the sources without proper indication is regarded as falsification which leads to repudiation please ask the teacher for advice if you are unsure of the rules!

  21. Rules for examinations and essays The rules concerning examinations and essays are set out in the University Law and the regulations of each university. Violation of these rules is considered a serious offence and will result in failure to complete the course in question, a warning by the Rector, and in serious cases, suspension from the university.

  22. Always have references to works consulted • Plagiarism= definition: to ”take (the work or idea of someone else) and pretend it is one’s own” (The Oxford Dictionary of Current English, 2001). • Plagiarism can be avoided simply by using the academic system for reference. • It is against the university regulations to plagiarise. Plagiarism is considered as serious as cheating in an exam. If a student is found cheating in an exam or having plagiarised, the matter will be brought to the attention of the Rector and you may get a warning. In more serious cases the consequence is expulsion (i.e. the student is forced to leave the university) for a period of time. The student will always be informed of the matter and has the right to be heard. • If you wish to hear more about these issues, your teachers as well as other staff at your department will be happy to tell you more.
