  1. Geography and Climate in Argos, Ancient Greece

  2. Rocks, Crops and Mountain TopsIn Argos it was very mountainous and rocky, so… • The land was non-fertile which made it hard to grow crops and use a plow. The soil was also very thin which didn't help farming. Thunder storms also made it hard to grow crops. • There weren’t many good farmlands. This means that in Argos, there were not many farmers either. Because of the lack of farmers, the Argives traded a lot!

  3. Rocks, Crops and Mountain Tops (continued) • The only place where the Argives did farm, was near the water because near the water, there were no rocks or mountains. • Land travel was very hard. • Some myths came about such as the god Apollo dancing on a mountain top. • The few crops they did harvest were wheat, some vegetables, grapes and olives.

  4. Water, Coasts and BarterThe Argives settled near the water so… Sailors~ • There were many sailors for both travel and trade. • A main job, along with fishing and sea trade. • Argives were very advanced in boats and sea travel because they needed to trade and travel by water. Geographical influences~ • Argos is in south west Greece. • Reasons why colonists didn’t settle in Greece early On: there wasn’t a lot of fresh water, Greece is in an active volcanic zone and has many earthquakes caused by being near the water). The heat didn’t help either. • It was hard to get together with other places through the water, which probably drew Greece apart. • Polis set up along the rivers and coasts (harbors) which was the only good place for farming. • The blue sea and white clouds influenced the color of the Greek flag

  5. Water, Coasts and Barter (continued) Trade By water ~ • The Argives relied heavily on water, especially for trade • The craftsmen got clay • the wealthy got exotic foods and drinks that couldn’t be grown in Greece • for the farmers, it was a way to sell a main food source with out having to grow it • Less than 20% of Greece had good farmland, and therefore, the Argives relied even more heavily on the trade, and the water in general • Although The Argives did grow some grain, It was very hard with the rocky, thin soil. Some of the things the Argives traded to get grain, (and timber) are, wine, olives, oil and honey. The water helped the Argives become prosperous.

  6. Rain, Weather and PainThere was A cold, wet winter and a long warm humid, rainy summer, so… • There were no roads in Argos so there were many deaths during travel in the winter. Traveling by sea = sinking in a storm, traveling by land=long, hard, cold walk (freezing to death) • It was warm and rainy (20-50 in of rain per year) so there was good crop grazing land. • The rain helped with agriculture (though many other difficulties countered that). • The temperature averaged about 75 °F in the summer • COLD= they wore warm cotton cloaks over their summer clothes • Plant seeds in the spring and harvest plants in the summer
