  1. OUR STARTING POINT: What Is Discipleship And What Does It Mean?

  2. Attributes of Discipleship Sharing The Baton: Not Passing The Baton • Passing The Baton: makes other leaders wait their turn • Sharing The Baton: leads together • Derek Redmond – 1988 Olympics – 400 meter relay race Medal Hopeful • Injured right before race began

  3. Attributes of Discipleship Sharing The Baton: Not Passing The Baton (Cont) • Preparing, again, for 1992 Olympics – Medal Hopeful – World Champs • Derek had the best start of his career • Fell down…another injury…couldn’t walk • Father came running from the stands Father: “You don’t have to do this” Derek: “Yes, I do” Father: “We’ll finish together” • They crossed the finish line – Loudest applause of entire games • That’s Sharing The Baton: Leading Together

  4. Attributes of Discipleship Discipleship is: Leading Alongside Multiple Generations (Tim 2:2): The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. • 4 Generations in Paul’s statement • Disciples that make disciples • They are all leading together – Sharing The Baton

  5. What Is Discipleship? Defining Discipleship (Matt 4:19): And He *said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 3 Parts to Jesus’ statement: • Follow Me: • It’s a Mental decision to follow Jesus • I Will Make You: • A Heart decision to all Him to change you into His image • Fishers of Men: • Creates Action; to make you a disciple maker (ref. Tim 2:2)

  6. Defining Discipleship (Matt 4:19): And He *said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 3 Stages of Relationship: (mental; heart; action)

  7. What Is Discipleship? Discipleship IS Relationship • Example how Apostle Paul Disciples Timothy (2 Timothy 1:2-7): To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. • Paul’s sincerity expresses his love for Timothy • Sincere love within relationships penetrates & changes people?

  8. Discipleship IS: • Sharing The Baton: Leading Together – Multi-Generational • “(1. Follow Me), and (2. I will make you) (3. fishers of men).” • Sincere Relationships: Putting someone else first
