  2. Agenda 5/9/14 • Paper turn in plans/options • Upcoming due date reminders • Intro to Siddhartha • Reading time Homework: • Email me your papers by 11:59 pm tonight! • Work on your portfolio (due Wed. May 14th) • Work on your practice senior board speech • Work on your reading journals

  3. Paper turn in plans-Research Paper? • Attach your new copy to your old copy (make sure the green rubric is attached!) • Turn it in to my desk, please! • Don’t forget this needs to be passing TODAY- don’t turn this in yet if you need to get more work time to fix the issues **I’m not available for help time today- so ask me questions today in class if you need to!

  4. Paper turn in-Catcher! • Attach your rough draft to the back of your final draft. Turn it into the box in the back of the room!

  5. Upcoming due date reminders • Whole completed portfolio due to me on May 14th • We’ll be in Lab 503 the 13th and 14th • Leave a blank spot for me to enter your project evaluation grade once I’ve evaluated the portfolio

Assignments • You’re expected to submit two reading journal entries throughout the reading of the book (following instructions on the sheet) • You can do the first two, the middle two, the last two… • You can do all three for extra credit • Not passing or close to not passing currently? Consider this a mandatory assignment! • You’ll have a final essay that you have the last two days of in-class time to work on (prompts will be handed out earlier for planning time) • You’re welcome to work ahead, and turn in all the work earlier if you’d like.

  8. Reading time • When we have extra time during practice board speeches, you’ll read. Bring your book every day! • When it’s your turn to rotate out of the classroom, you can read. *More on this to come next week • You can read at home, too. 

Siddhartha Background Notes • The author Hermann Hesse was born in Germany on July 2, 1877 • Born to parents who were from missionary families • Travelled to India in 1911, and became fascinated with the story of the Buddha • Married 3 times • Won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946 • Died in 1962

  10. A Few Characters in Siddhartha • Siddhartha-our protagonist (not to be confused with "The” Siddhartha/Buddha) • Govinda- Siddhartha’s best friend • Gotama-how “The” Buddha is referred to in the book

  11. Language Challenges • Use resources from the book to help you define and understand some of the foreign words/concepts • Be prepared for some “adult” situations…and please handle them maturely. Keep in mind that different cultures have different “norms”, and be respectful about how you discuss them. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

  12. Chapter 1 • In groups of 4-5, read Chapter 1 out loud and complete your reading journal assignment together (note-everyone should record their own work, but you’re welcome to brainstorm!) • We’ll share ideas and insights, and get more info on Buddhism, on Monday
