  1. James Elliott Infrastructure and Architecture

  2. Outline HPCI Cluster Overview Azul Itanium Cores, Processors, Hyperthreading Highly Parallel vs. Memory Intensive Benchmarks Computing Resources Looking ahead

  3. HPCI Cluster Overview HPCI manages 4 clusters Azul ( Spanish for Blue )‏ Highly Available 38 compute nodes (32 bit), 2 headnodes 1TB local storage 2TB Network Attached Storage (NAS) used for replication, backup, and large file sharing.

  4. HPCI Cluster Overview HPCI manages 4 clusters Itanium Single Headnode 7 compute nodes Dual Processor IA64 (64bit) 8GB RAM Offline due to power and cooling constraints

  5. HPCI Cluster Overview HPCI manages 4 clusters Playstation 3 Single Headnode 2 compute nodes Experimental Uses the Cell Processor

  6. HPCI Cluster Overview HPCI manages 4 clusters Infiniband Cluster Single Headnode 9 compute nodes Experimental Infiniband network interface 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps)‏ 10 times faster than Azul networking Download 700MB movie in 7 seconds!

  7. HPCI Cluster Overview • Azul, PS3, Itanium are connected using Gigabit Ethernet

  8. Azul High Availability Headnodes use HA-OSCAR (High Availability OSCAR), if one fails the 2nd will immediately take its place Developed at Louisiana Tech by Dr. Box and his eXtreme Computing Research group in collaboration with Intel, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, and Ericsson

  9. Azul Headnodes: Dual Processor, Dual Core 64 bit Xeon processor with Hyperthreading (x86_64)‏ 4GB RAM 70GB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk for OS 1TB external SAS storage unit configured in RAID 0

  10. Azul • Compute Nodes • 38 dual 32 bit Xeon processors with Hyperthreading • 1.5GB RAM • 70GB SATA drive for local scratch space

  11. Azul • 4 times the number of compute nodes as Itanium • Compute nodes have 1/8th the RAM as Itanium nodes

  12. Itanium Headnode: Dual Processor, 64 bit Itanium2 processor (IA64)‏ 8GB RAM 70GB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk for OS 1TB external SAS storage shared from Azul

  13. Itanium Compute Nodes: Dual Processor, 64 bit Itanium2 processor (IA64)‏ 8GB RAM 70GB SAS hard disk for scratch

  14. Itanium • Fewer compute nodes • 64 bit architecture • Lots of RAM • Fast Hard Disks • Ideal for memory intensive applications

  15. Core, Processors, Hyperthreading • In the 90s most computers had 1 processor, that had 1 core

  16. Core, Processors, Hyperthreading • In the 90s most computers had 1 processor, that had 1 core • High End computers sometimes had 2 processors

  17. Core, Processors, Hyperthreading • In 2002 Intel introduced Hyperthreading • Hyperthreading tricks a computer into thinking 1 processor is really 2. • These fake processors share many resources

  18. Core, Processors, Hyperthreading • You can have 2 of these • Dual Processor with Hyperthreading would be the nomenclature • To the computer this would appear to be 4 processors • This is what Azul's compute nodes have

  19. Core, Processors, Hyperthreading • In 2006 a true dual core processor was introduced. • A dual core processor has 2 real processors on the same die. These processors do not share resources • This would appear as 4 processors

  20. Core, Processors, Hyperthreading • You can still have dual processors. • Dual Processor with Dual Cores with hyperthreading • This will appear as 8 processors to the OS

  21. Highly Parallel vs Memory Intensive • Azul has: • 76 real processor across 38 compute nodes • With Hyperthreading enabled this is 152 processors reported • Each headnode 2 dual core processors ( 4 total processors )‏ • 8 with Hyperthreading

  22. Highly Parallel vs Memory Intensive • Itanium has: • 16 total processors • 14 processors dedicated to computing • 2 processors on the headnode

  23. Highly Parallel vs Memory Intensive • Azul has 57 GB of RAM across 38 compute nodes • Itanium has 56 GB of RAM across 7 compute nodes

  24. Highly Parallel vs Memory Intensive • Azul compute nodes are 32 bit • Itanium compute nodes are 64 bit

  25. Benchmarks • Using the Top500 benchmark • High Performance Linpack (HPL)‏ • Azul (30 nodes only) achieves .1 Teraflops (TFlops)‏ • Itanium (3 nodes only) achieves .025 TFlops

  26. Benchmarks Why only 30 nodes on Azul and 3 on Itanium? Cooling and power limitations. Over the summer we plan to move the clusters to a more suitable facility

  27. Computing Resources 115 PIII servers 2 Dell PowerEdge 2950 58 multi-core motherboards with 66 dual-core CPUs 6 Dual Xeon EM64 servers

  28. Computing Resources If you need computing power, contact us we would love to help.

  29. Looking ahead Participation in Open Science Grid (OSG)‏ Increase Itanium capacity from 8 to 24 Provide TRAC website to support HPCI and any related projects Ticket system for support Feature requests Bug Tracker
