  1. The Circulatory System 2

  2. Today’s Announcement • Six-Weeks TEST: • Next Tuesday and Wednesday!!! • All of the Human Body Systems • Study your notes and the reviewsheet!!! Study: Don’t study:

  3. Today’s Warm-Up #1 • Everyone knows Helium willcause your voice to soundlike a chipmunk… • But what about Sulfur Hexafluoride???

  4. Today’s Warm-Up #2 • Circulatory System… a hot little jam. • Song and Lyrics • Paste lyrics into lab-book

  5. Today’s Objectives • Circulatory System • Function • Major parts of the circulatory system • Blood vessels • Arteries • Veins • Capillaries • Blood • Heart

  6. Circulatory System Circulatory System Vocabulary Heart Atrium Ventricle Hemoglobin Platelet Plasma Artery Vein Capillary Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  7. What is the function of the circulatory system? • To move materials throughout the body: • Oxygen • Carbon dioxide & other wastes • Nutrients (food) • Hormones (chemical messengers) • Antibodies (fight infection)

  8. List the parts of thecirculatory system: • Blood vessels • Arteries • Veins • Capillaries • Blood • Heart

  9. Compare & contrast the three types of blood vessels. • Arteries carry blood away from the heart- usually oxygen-rich. • Veins carry blood to the heart- usually oxygen-poor. • Capillaries connect arteries & veins, and allow food, wastes, etc. to pass in and out

  10. Describe arteries • Blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart • Have thick, elastic walls made of connective tissue and smooth muscle tissue

  11. Describe veins • Blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood back toward the heart • Have one-way valves that keep blood moving toward the heart

  12. Describe capillaries • Very thin- Only one cell thick • Connect arteries & veins • Allow gases & nutrients to be transferred

  13. What is blood? • Is RED (bright or dark)… not blue! • Carries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from your body cells. • About 5,000,000 red blood cells in ONE drop of blood.

  14. What is blood made of?

  15. What does blood transport? • The Bloodmobile- music video

  16. What is blood? • Red blood cells: • Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, waste products, etc. • Contain hemoglobin-allows them to carry oxygen & gives them their color • Last about 4 months

  17. What is blood? • White blood cells: • Protect the body from germs/bacteria • Attack and destroy germs when they enter the body

  18. What is blood? • Platelets: • Special blood cells that help stop bleeding • They “clog up” a cut and help form a scab

  19. What is blood? • Plasma: • The liquid part of the blood- straw (light brown) color • About half of your blood is made of plasma • Plasma is made in the liver

  20. The Heart • Size of your fist • Thick, muscular walls • Divided into two pumps- left and right • Each pump has two chambers • Upper chambers - atrium receives blood coming in from the veins • Lower chambers - ventricle squeezes blood out into the arteries

  21. 3 1 4 2

  22. Close up of heart valve-Heart sounds are made by the valves as they open and close

  23. Circulatory System Circulatory System Vocabulary Heart Atrium Ventricle Hemoglobin Platelet Plasma Artery Vein Capillary Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  24. Make it a great day Mustangs!
