  2. For those of you who have found a placement………Congratulations! You will soon be entering the world of work Nervous? Excited? Worried? Happy? Mixed emotions?

  3. If you are still seeking a placement…… • Don’t give up! • Companies ARE still recruiting placement students • You have until the end of September (ANOTHER 5 MONTHS!) to find a placement • Speak to a Careers Advisor to review your applications and get some interview practice

  4. Placement Overview • Great News - A good degree + Commercial Placement will significantly enhance your graduate employment prospects!!  • You may be offered a graduate job with your Placement Provider • 97% of placement students who graduated last year, gained a first or a 2.1

  5. Once you have found a placement you need to……… • Email your Placement Officer ASAP who will send you the paperwork to complete • Read the Placement handbook • Submit the following two forms: • Emergency Contact Details Form • Pre-Placement Details Form (Hard copies with original signatures are required) You can drop them off in Room 7.09 or leave them with reception (5th floor Hub)

Placement overview continued…. • You pay an annual tuition fee of £1000 • The fees are set by Newcastle University – NOT the Business School • The Business School placement is a formal, recognised placement – you will be registered as ‘intercalating • You therefore have dual status – are a full time employee AND a full time student!

Placement overview cont…. • You can retain access to student facilities, eg IT systems, Robinson Library • If in London – make sure you apply for a student Oyster card – you will save £££££’s – Visit the TFLwebsite http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ • You may still be eligible for Council Tax exemption – you can print your own letter from S3P or contact Programme Secretary for letter

Developing Your Graduate Skills • Newcastle University have developed a skills framework which graduate employers seek (refer to placement handbook) • Consider how you can develop these skills during placement • These skills include: • Self management (planning, organising, initiative, problem solving, adaptability) • Interaction (Communication Team Working) • Application (occupation awareness, commercial acumen, cultural awareness)

  9. Your Conduct • Please be respectful of your work colleagues at all time • Do not get drawn into ‘office politics’ (easier said than done!) • Do not misuse IT systems or make personal calls unless on break • Create a good impression – you are acting as an Ambassador for the Business School

  10. Student Finance • You can still apply for your student loan (both the fees and the maintenance element) • Apply in the usual way – you will get a reduced rate maintenance loan • If you find a placement after you have submitted the form, don’t worry – the tuition fees team will send through notification to student finance to amend the amount • Any queries should be submitted to the Student Finance Team http://www.ncl.ac.uk/enquiries/

Registering as an Intercalating Student • Placement Officer will inform the Student Progress Office and the Student Support Office that you are undertaking a placement • You will receive an email in August inviting you to register for next year (2014-15) • Log onto S3P and follow the steps on screen • Any problems with registering – contact your Placement Officer or Programme secretary

Making the most of your placement • Set realistic personal goals • Have regular meetings with your • supervisor – ask for regular feedback • Make the most of any opportunities that come your way………. • Take the initiative – ask to become involved in projects; ask to shadow other departments- the more exposure you have, the more you will learn

Making the most of your placement • Don’t to be afraid to ask questions – you are not expected to know everything! • Keep a portfolio of your work which you can take to future interviews • Tackle all tasks with enthusiasm and a positive attitude – avoid negativity • Network – use it to find your next career step • Leave with tangible accomplishments

Reporting Process • Must complete pre-placement form and emergency contact details form BEFORE Placement starts • Within first month you must complete ‘Placement Year Information’ Report • No later than half way through your placement you and your Supervisor must complete ‘Interim Progress Report’ • An end of Placement ‘Final Progress Report’ must be submitted by student and supervisor

What we expect from your Employer • Once we have your pre-placement details – employers are sent a health & safety form to complete • Within 2 weeks of placement commencement supervisor must submit induction checklist • They must submit interim progress report half way through placement • They must submit final progress report end of placement

Employer’s Responsibilities to you • Appoint you a supervisor who can provide support and guidance, identify and set objectives • Provide you with a clear job description outlining your role and responsibilities • Provide learning opportunities which are challenging and appropriate • Provide you with the necessary training to enable you to fulfil your role

  17. Health & Safety Employers must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable the health & safety and welfare of employees, including placement students. THEREFORE THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY FOR MEETING STATUTORY HEALTH & SAFETY RQUIREMENTS WITHIN A PLACEMENT REMAINS WITH THE PLACEMENT ORGANISATION

  18. Health & Safety • As a University we have a duty of care towards our students. • A letter regarding Health & safety, and a Health & Safety checklist is sent to all Placement Providers • We have the right to withdraw a placement if there are health & safety concerns

  19. Health & Safety Legislation • 5 or more employees within the organisation – MUST have a health & safety policy • The Placement Provider must provide you with induction including Health & Safety briefing • Students must be covered by Employer Public & Liability Insurance • Employers are obliged to maintain a record of accidents which occurred at work

  20. Health & Safety • Where necessary organisation should provide access to first aid material and/or qualified first aiders • Employers should have emergency procedures for dealing with imminent danger (eg. fire evacuation) • Students must follow instructions and act sensibly to protect own health & safety and that of others

Health & Safety • Be aware of your environment and any risks around you – eg. loose wires, blocked corridors • If you have ANY worries about the health & safety of your environment contact your Placement Officer IMMEDIATELY • Further info from HSE: http://www.hse.gov.uk/youngpeople/workexperience/students.htm

  22. In case of any problems • Try and resolve it with your supervisor in the first instance – the sooner the better • If the problem you are having is with your supervisor approach another Manager or HR department • If the problem does not get resolved, contact your Placement Officer, outlining the problem, who will recommend course of action and intervene if necessary

PLACEMENT PREPARATION TRAINING DAY Monday 9th June 9.30 - 15.30 8th Floor Partners Room All placement students are required to attend Workshops will include: • How to make the most of your placement – dealing with the working environment • Dealing with problems • How to make your placement a success • Lunch provided, opportunity to network with other placement students

  24. EXCEL TRAINING DAY A one day training course is available for students going on placement - but numbers are limited! Highly beneficial for students who will be using Excel during their placement The training will cover the basics, V look up, Pivot Tables You can attend one of the following dates: 4th or 5th JUNE To register your interest please email nicola.burnip@ncl.ac.uk

  25. Finally…… • Contact your Placement Officer at ANY time during the course of the placement • Our students are capable of AMAZING achievements! • We ALWAYS receive excellent feedback from employers……. • ENJOY your placement! Remember to have fun along the way!
