Russian Interaction with Western Europe Peter the Great • Discovered that the Russians were 200 years behind the advancements of the Western Europeans • Idolized the Western European Civilization • Began to turn Russia away from Asian culture connections and towards the culture of the West • Believed that by following Europe customs it would help modernize the Russian Empire

Russian Interaction with Western Europe Changes made by Peter • He strived to decrease Russia’s isolation and to increase the size and power of the empire. • Commanded Russian nobility to shave their beards and to dress in European style • Encouraged women to participate in public interests • Education in Children • St. Petersburg was created

Russian Interaction with Ottomans Catherine the Great • Was crowned Empress and absolute ruler of Russia. • Believed the Russian Empire would gain power by attaining a larger population • Started to expand through war • Started her expansion by gaining control over Poland During the war the Ottoman controlled Egypt.

Russian Interaction with Ottomans Catherine the Great • The Russians supported the Egyptians who were under Ottoman rule, when they chose to rebel from1769-1771. • In 1770 the Russians also helped to incite an anti-Turkish rebellion in Greece. • Even greater than her defeat of Poland was the control that she gained of the Black Sea and the vast steppes of Crimea (Ukraine), by defeating the Ottoman Turks.

Russian Interaction with Ottomans Catherine the Great • The successful war with the Ottomans, known as the Russo-Turkish wars, gave Russia control over the rich north shore of the Black Sea by 1783. • These Turkish defeats were the largest in history • The interaction between the Ottomans and Russians proved to be extremely violent throughout the Russo-Turkish wars.
