  1. Software Defined Systems (SDS) Yaser Jararweh yijararweh@just.edu.jo Jordan University of Science and Technology

  2. Introduction • Software-Defined System provides a well defined framework for complex systems management . • SDS added software components which help abstract actual IT equipment and other layers • Basically: • “Software managed component(s)” • “Hardware-independent management” • Very bad news for specialized hardware vendors

  3. Core Components of SDS • Software Defined Networking (SDN) • Software Defined Storage, • Software Defined Servers (Virtualization), • Software Defined Datacenters (SDD) • Software Defined Security (SDSec), • And ultimately Software Defined Clouds SDCloud)

  4. Software Defined DataCenter (SDD) SDD term coined by VMware’s Steve Herrod.

  5. Introduction (SDD) • Software-defined datacenter (SDD) is the phrase used to refer to a data center where all infrastructure is virtualized and delivered as a service. • The Control of the data center is fully automated by software, meaning hardware configuration is maintained through intelligent software systems. • This is in contrast to traditional data centers where the infrastructure managment is typically defined by hardware and devices.

  6. Introduction (SDD) • Software-defined data centers are considered by many experts to be the next step in the evolution of virtualization and cloud computing. • Support Business Logic Driven Automation • Business oriented environment • Allow applications to define its own resource requirements based on corporate SLA and compliance policies • Business logic elements translated into a set of management instructions

  7. Core Components of SDD SDD is a layer of abstraction above multiple other SDx layers (network, virtualization, storage, etc),

  8. Core Components of SDD • Network Virtualization • The user defined his needs and SLA then the software will take care of the rest. • Also called Software-defined networking (SDN) • Server Virtualization • Hypervisor and VMs management • Storage virtualization • Abstracting the management software from the SAN allows customers to manage multiple storage types and brands from one single software interface.

  9. Objectives • Software Defined DataCenter (SDD) that provide the following: • Efficient power usage • Proportional power consumption • Efficient cooling system • Free cooling solutions where possible • Green DataCenters • Flexible system management and scalability
