  3. What • He invented the light bulb.

  4. When • In 1879, Thomas Edison discovered a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours. He eventually produced a bulb that could glow for up to 1500 hours.

  5. Where • Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in the United States.

  6. Why • It was invented to replace candles and oil lamps. It was also invented to produce light for extended periods of time.

  7. How • He experimented with thousands of different filaments to find just the right materials to glow well and be long lasting.
