  17. THINK IT THROUGH • REREAD: Why aren’t the lifeboats full? Sailors panic in their hurry to get people off the ship. • What problems kept some people from being saved? not enough lifeboats, lifeboats were half full, people didn’t know where to go.

  20. THINK IT THROUGH • REREAD: Why doesn’t the Californian answer the Titanic’s cal for help? The radio is off & the sailor don’t realize that the Titanic is in trouble. • Tell three things that happened before the ship sank. a.) sailors have trouble with two lifeboats; b.) people jump into the water and try to swim to lifeboats; c.) band stops playing.

  23. THINK IT THROUGH • How long did it take for the Titanic to sink? two hours, 20 minutes. • REREAD: Try to picture this scene in your mind. Can you feel the coldness of the people? • What dangers did the people in the lifeboats face? Falling into icy water, freezing to death, never being rescued.

  26. THINK IT THROUGH • What new safety laws were passed as a result of the Titanic sinking? • Lifeboats for every passenger, • safety drills so people know where to go, • ship radios are always on; • ice patrols track iceberg.

  27. HOMEWORK • Make a time line of the events in the story. Use it to retell the story in your own words. • The lifeboats could hold 1,100 people. Yet only 705 were rescued. Why weren’t more people saved? Boats were lowered half filled. • Do you think this event could happen today? Use details from the story to support your opinion.

CAUSE & EFFECT (page 23) • Cause: the reason something happens • Effect: what happens • Cause: The iceberg put a hole in the ship Effect: Water started pouring into the ship. • Cause: Many passengers thought the Titanic could not sink - Effect: Many passengers were laughing and joking when they came on deck. • Cause: There weren’t enough spaces on the lifeboats  Effect: Many people were still on the Titanic when it sank. • Cause: The Californian turned off its radio at night  Effect: The Californian did not hear the Titanic’s call for help.

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER (pg 24) • The Titanic hits an iceberg. • Some passengers climb into the deck in their fancy clothes. • The radio room send a call for help, but no one comes. • People in lifeboats row away from the ship. • The Titanic sinks. • Another ship picks up the survivors and takes them to New York.

The Titanic – Timeline Activity • 1908-1909 Construction of the Titanic begins in Belfast, Ireland. • 1911 The hull (body or frame of a ship)of Titanic is successfully launched. • 1912 January: Sixteen wooden lifeb oats are fitted on board the Titanic. • April 10, 1912. 9: 30-11: 30 a.m. Passengers arrive in Southampton & board ship. • Aprill 10, 1912 Noon (12: 00 am) The Titanic casts off & begins her maiden (first) voyage. • April 12-13, 1912 The Titanic sails through calm waters.

  32. The Titanic – Timeline Activity 7. April 14. 11:40 p.m. The lookouts see an iceberg dead ahead. The iceberg strikes the Titanic on the starboard (right) side of her bow. 8. April 14. 11:50 p.m. Water has poured in and risen 14 feet in the front part of the ship. 9. April 15. 12:00 a.m. The captain is told the ship can only stay afloat for a couple of hours. He gives order to call for help over the radio. 10.April 15. 12.05 a.m. Orders are given to uncover the lifeboats & to get passengers & crew ready on deck. There is only room for half of the estimated 2,227 on board in the lifeboats.

  33. The Titanic – Timeline Activity 11. April 12. 12.25 am. Lifeboats are now loading with women and children first. The Carpathia, southeast of the Titanic by about 58 miles, picks up the distress call & immediately heads full speed to the rescue. 12. April 15. 12.45 am. The first lifeboat is safely lowered away. It can carry 65 people, but only leaves with 28. The first distress rocket is fired. Eight rockets are fired the whole nights. 13. April 15. 2:05 am. The last lifeboats leaves. There are now over 1,500 people left on the ship.

  34. The Titanic – Timeline Activity 14. April 15. 2:20 am. The Titanic’s broken off stern settles back into the water, becoming more level for a few moments. 15. April 15. 4:10 am. The first lifeboat is picked up by the Carpathia. 16. April 15, 8:50 am. The Carpathia leaves the area bound for NY. She carries 705 survivors. 17. April 18. 9 pm. The Carpathia arrives in NY. 18. April 19-May 25. Several ships are sent to the disaster site to recover bodies.
