  2. Who • His full name is Pere Jacques Marquette • His family was wealthy and noble • He was born in Laon, France 1675 and he died in New France 1637 • He was very well educated • His career was being a Jesuit priest and an explorer • He spent ten years studying and teaching in France

When • Born in France on June 10, 1636 • 1666: Father Jacques Marquette was sent to Canada by the priests to teach native Indians about Catholic religion • In 1673 he lead a missionary down the Mississippi river • He was 36 on the expedition • Pere did this because he wanted to find the Northwest Passage • 1673 Began an expedition and discovered the the Mississippi river • May 19, 1675: Father Jacques Marquette died  near Ludington, Michigan
