  1. Justin Pelletier Robotic Surgery

  2. What is Robotic Surgery? • Uses a patient cart and surgeon console instead of traditional surgery. • An alternative for laparoscopic surgery (Minimal invasive). • Smaller incisions and instruments.

  3. History • The first robotic surgery: • In 1987 • Was a Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) [4]

  4. da Vinci Surgery • Consists of: • Patient cart: 4 robotic arms. • Surgeon Console: 3D imaging portion along with forceps like instruments. • Medical professional in room. [6]

  5. Surgeon Console [2] [2]

  6. Patient Cart [2]

  7. Types of surgery(available through the da Vinci system) • Cardiac • Colorectal • General Surgery • Gynecology • Head and Neck • Thoracic • Urology

  8. Safety Benefits • Minimally invasive: less scaring, smaller incisions. • Quicker recovery. • Shorter hospital stay. • Less risk of infection. • Low blood loss. • Patient cart arms mimic surgeon's movements. • Surgeon is seated implies less fatigue. • Performs self-safety checks. • Fail-safe: shuts down safely. • Medical professional in surgical suite.

  9. Setbacks • Less degrees of motion with robotic arms. • Cost: still uses surgeon but robotic system costs more for hospital. Surgeries usually the same cost. • Risks with some surgeries and treatments are not eliminated. • Not cost effective. • Improved patient outcome claim not fully proved.

  10. Recent Accomplishments • da Vinci: • Single-site • Single incision • FDA approved for gallbladder removal • Cost: $1.3 to $2.2 million (depending on existing technology) [2] [2]

  11. Future? • In development: • By Dr. Dennis Fowler and Dr. Peter Allen. • Incision is 15 millimeters (6/10ths of an inch). • Once inside it unfolds to reveal components. • Titan Medical- Toronto
