What is Marriage? According to the Catholic Church, in the Sacrament of a man and a woman are united in such a way that they become one flesh, each belonging to one another. Matrimony is a celebration of a lifelong commitment of faithful love. Marriage is the supreme example of human love. NOTE: To change images on this slide, select a picture and delete it. The Sacrament of Matrimony In the exchange of promises during the marriage ceremony, the couple administers the sacrament to each other. Church law requires that there must be an official Church witness present such as a priest, because without their presence, the sacrament of marriage is invalid. Matrimony is an act of public worship, which brings God’s blessing to the couple. Matrimony often takes place during the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy. The couple exchanges promises. One example is: “I, [name], take you, [name] to be my wife/husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. “Till Death Do Us Part” • The Catholic Church believes and teaches that marriage is a sacrament, a symbol of love that Jesus Christ has for his people.Marriage is also a covenant (promise) in which a man and a woman establish a partnership of their whole life together • Marriage is also ordered towards a good life between spouses, and the procreation and education of children.For this reason, it is considered to be an important vocation.
Matrimony in the Old Testament • Jews honoured the marriage bond, which they believed was instituted by God (Genesis 2:23-24).This marital bond is protected in the Ten Commandments – “Thou shall not commit adultery” (6th commandment: Exodus 20:14-17) • Adultery: When two partners, of whom at least one is married to another party, have sexual relations • In the Old Testament, marriage was not regarded as a sacrament and there is no religious ceremony connected with marriage. In the early times, weddings were more like formal agreements (Genesis 24: 63-67) • Polygamy existed during the time of the Old Testament. Polygamy is the practice of having more than one husband or wife at the same time. Catholic doctrine is simple: “One man and one woman”.
Matrimony in the New Testament • Jesus explains that marriage is the unity between one man and one woman. He explains that one’s wife cannot be thrown away, which means that divorce is prohibited. When a man and wife love each other as their own flesh, they are doing what Christ does with the Church – representing unity
Sexuality ? ? "Thus, men and women, as the act of making love shows, are not rivals in a power struggle, but partners — complementary partners — in a joint urge for self-abandon that makes them putty in each other's hands. Orgasm is a high point of reciprocal self-giving love. But the self-giving is different for the two spouses, different in ways that are not trivial and that cannot be overlooked. The chief difference is in male initiative and female receptivity. For the sex act even to seem to happen, a husband must act, in an energetic and obvious way, and his wife must receive his action. He exercises a kind of initiative, and she is receptive to it. But his initiative is not aggressive and oppressive. It is a headlong rush to hand himself over to his woman, lock, stock, and barrel. And her receptivity is not passive and degrading. She gratefully accepts his compliment and responds with an equally active gift in kind, rushing to hand herself over to him, lock, stock, and barrel.“ Guess who wrote this?
Requirements for Sacrament of Marriage • Must be a minimum of 18 years old • Couple must meet with parish priest for an interview • Must present baptismal certificates • May have to participate in premarital counseling • Must attend a course on marriage and family planning • Must sign a document that they are receiving this sacrament on their own free will
To Be Married In Church or Not? • Sacrament of Matrimony – Catholic Marriage- Is only valid for Catholics in a Catholic Church- One of the 7 sacraments- Sacramental marriage is only restricted to men and women who meet certain requirements • Civil Marriage – City Hall- Not accepted by the Church- A civil marriage takes place at a city hall which is accepted under civil law.
Wedding Rings Rings are a symbol of marriage in a Christian marriage, which symbolizes unity and reminds each partner of their marital commitment to one another. Rings are presented during their vows and they say, “With this ring, I thee wed” Why is the Wedding Ring Worn on the 4th finger on the left hand?The origin of wearing a wedding ring on one’s left hand on the 4th finger comes from Medieval Europe. The index finger represents God the Father, the middle finger represents God the Son, and the ring finger represents God the Holy Spirit. Those three fingers together represent The Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit guides us and moves us to be good, loving, respectful and caring for one another.
4 Tasks of Marriage “For Better or Worse” CompromiseCouples experience difficulty at the beginning of their married life together because they need to learn to compromise. This includes: household chores, cooking dinner, helping another. A married couple is a team and is only strong together physically and mentally. Respect One AnotherDespite any differences and difficulties present, couples must never loose respect for each other. Just because you get married, does not mean you give up. You need to continue working at your relationship together. • FinancesCouples have to learn how to manage finances together. Big expenses include: paying for wedding, mortgage, children expenses. Money must not come in between a couple’s marriage, which is why a couple must continue to feed their faith to nourish their marriage • Deal with In-LawsWhen one gets married, they inherit their spouses family too. Difficulties may arise due to differences. One must remember to love and accept one another, despite differences. We are all family.

Church’s Views on Divorce • The Catholic Church does not believe in divorce. Marriage is a promise made before God, stating that a couple’s love for the rest of their lives.When a married couple gets a divorce, they are breaking that promise they made to God. • If a couple experiences difficulties, the Church recommends and offers marital counseling in order to help couples with their difficulties in order to strengthen their marriage • The Catechism states that divorce is immoral because: “it introduces disorder into the family and into society. This disorder brings grave harm to the deserted spouse, to children traumatized by the separation of their parents and often torn between them, and because of its contagious effect which makes it truly a plague on society.” (CCC, n. 2385)
Church’s Views on Annulment • An Annulment is to declare that a marriage never took place or existed. • Difference between divorce and an annulment:- Divorce is granted in civil law and recognizes that a marriage no longer legally exists. (Ex: Province grants marriage license and can issue a divorce )- An annulment recognizes that a marriage no longer exists in the eyes of the Church (Ex. Only a Church can celebrate Matrimony and can issue an annulment) • Catholic Marriage TribunalA council that determines if a person can get an annulment • Reasons for an annulment include:- Severe addiction to drugs or alcohol- Psychological disorder- Mental incapacity- Bigamy (being married to two people at the same time)- Refusal or inability to consummate the marriage (never had sexual relations)
Weddings Across Different Cultures • GreekA Greek Orthodox priest blesses the rings and the best man places the rings on the right ring finger of the bride and groom. The best man is known as “Koumparos” (male) and “Koumpara” (female). The priest blesses two wedding crowns that are attached by ribbon, which the couple must kiss before the priest places them on their heads. The bride and groom also walk around the altar 3 times while holding the Bible in their hands. • PakistaniPakistani wedding traditions are based on rules that are defined in the Holy Quran (Islamic Sacred Book). Traditional Pakistani marriage celebrations last for four days. Firstly, a bride is kept in isolation for some days during her beautification. Then during the process of Mehndi, relatives apply henna on the bride’s hands or feet. The day of marriage, the bride wears a long skirt-like costume, and a lot of jewelry. Food is very important during a Pakistani wedding.
Weddings Across Different Cultures • Canada/USAIn North America, weddings have become a huge social gathering where a lot of emphasis is placed on décor, the wedding cake, photography, DJ and entertainment.A new trend that many couples have been turning to are destination weddings where couples go to resorts to celebrate their marriage. Also, other couples are preferring ceremonies in outdoor gardens. During the ceremony, there is often a bouquet toss which signifies that the female who caught the bouquet will be the next female to get married. • Italian- Canadian/AmericanNote that Italian weddings in Canada as opposed to Italy are very different. Ceremonies in Italy are very simple, however Italian-American ceremonies are huge events. Typically weddings range in large numbers around 200 + people and place a huge emphasis on eating. A new tradition has been adopted in North America where guests give monetary gifts called a “Busta” (money envelope) which is placed in a “Busta Box.” Wedding parties are also typically large ranging to sometimes even 20 people.
