  1. The Cell Cycle

  2. Tennessee State Standards Addressed • Grade 7 • GLE 0707.1.4 Illustrate how cell division occurs in sequential stages to maintain the chromosome number of a species. • SPI 0707.1.4 Sequence a series of diagrams that depict chromosome movement during plant cell division.

  3. Interphase Cytokinesis Mitosis Cell Cycle Click on a green box to learn more about that stage of the cell cycle Take Quiz

  4. Interphase • During Interphase, the cell’s chromosomes duplicate. • This is the phase that occurs BEFORE mitosis begins. • A period of Growth Take Quiz

  5. Mitosis • Mitosis is the part the cell cycle in which the NUCLEUS divides • There are 4 phases of Mitosis… • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • Or…PMAT

  6. Prophase • Prophase is the FIRST phase of Mitosis • The nuclear membrane has disappeared • Chromosomes have condensed and shortened • Centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell (in Animal cells ONLY) • Plant cells do NOT have Centrioles

  7. Metaphase • Metaphase is the Second phase of Mitosis • Chromatids line up in the MIDDLE of the cell • Spindle fibers attach to the Centromeres

  8. Anaphase • Anaphase is the THIRD phase of Mitosis • Each pair of chromatids separate, because the spindle fibers begin to shorten • The separated chromatids are now called chromosomes

  9. Telophase • Telophase is the LAST phase of Mitosis • TWO NEW NUCLEI form, but the two new cells are still connected • Spindle fibers start to disappear • In plants, a cell plate forms between the two new cells

  10. Cytokinesis • Cytokinesis occurs after the last phase of Mitosis • The CYTOPLASM separates and two new cells form • In plants, new Cell Membranes form from the Cell Plate Take Quiz

  11. Are you ready to TEST your knowledge of the Cell Cycle? Hmmmm….The Cell Cyle….. Take the Quiz! Click the “Home” button if you need to revisit the material

  12. What is the first phase of Mitosis? Interphase Prophase

  13. That is CORRECT! Great Job!
