  1. GRNET participation to 6NET Athanassios Liakopoulos Greek Research & Technology Network / GRNET aliako@grnet.gr, http://www.grnet.gr Athens, October 19th, 2004

  2. Greek partners to 6NET consortium • Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET) • National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) – NETMODE • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) • University of Crete (UoC) • Computer Technology Institute (CTI) GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  3. 6NET Work Packages (WP) • WP1: Build and Operate the IPv6 Network • WP2: IPv4-IPv6 coexistence, interworking and migration • WP3:Basic Network Services • WP4: IPv6 application and service support • WP5: IPv6 middleware and user application trials in demanding environments • WP6: IPv6 network management architecture and tools • WP7 - Dissemination and Exploitation of Results GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  4. 6NET Work Packages (WP) GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  5. Network • Designed and deployed the first large scale native IPv6 network in Greece that spans across Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patra since 2001. • The network consists of four Cisco 7206VXR routers connected either via ATM PVCs or dark fiber with speeds up to 1 Gbps. The international connectivity to the 6NET core network is achieved through an STM-1 ATM L2 (CCC) circuit though GEANT. • The Greek IPv6 network is partially extended within the aforementioned university (IPv4) networks and multiple laboratories are currently connected via IPv6 to 6NET. GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  6. Network • Other network-related activities • A detailed addressing plan is formulated for the 2001:648::/32 sTLA. • Early field trial (EFT) versions IOS were deployed and tested. Software flaws were identified and troubleshooted. • IPv6 IS-IS and BGP protocols are deployed. • IPv6 multicast services are supported. • Describe with RPSLng the IPv6 GRNET routing policy (AS5408). GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  7. Services • Provides DNS (forward and reverse) services to 6NET and GRNET networks. Also, DNSSEC, which allows secure zone transfers by enabling either TSIG or IP-based authentication, was successfully tested and appropriate how-to reports were produced. • Tested Name Server Daemon (nsd) and DNS Proxy Server (totd1.4) and ported them to Solaris OS environment. All source code modifications have been incorporated in the latest mainstream versions. • Investigated the combined operation and interaction of Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms in IPv6 networks, namely traffic policing, traffic shaping and class-based queuing. They also participated in the deployment of QoS services in the 6NET core network. GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  8. Security • Developed "OpenEye", a Denial of Service (DoS) tool for both IPv4 and IPv6 networks using Netflow data collected from core routers. The tool detects anomalies in the traffic pattern and generates alarms. Initial tests were performed within GRNET with IPv6 traffic. • Focused on the security aspects in the 6NET network. Tried to identify the security issues or requirements and suggested ways to address them. GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  9. Management • Extended "Weathermap“ (http://netmon.grnet.gr/weathermap/), a perl tool that displays in a visual way the utilization of the network links of a network as two ways colored arrows (or popup MRTG diagrams) on a map representing the logical topology of the network. Weathermap is used in the 6NET core network. • Participated in tests involving NetSNMP and MRTGv6. GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  10. Applications • Participated in implementing IPv6 networking for GnomeMeeting and Darwin Streaming Server (DSS) and tested various videoconferencing, streaming (multicast-enabled) applications, such as GnomeMeeting, OpenPhone, MBONE tools, MCAST6, etc. • Use Websphere Portal Server for implementing a portal that gathers data from agents located in miscellaneous network devices. The developed portlets are responsible for gathering and visualizing results from network devices. Communication is carried out via Web Services (SOAP/WSDL) in IPv6 and IPv4 environment. • Contribute to IPv6 (Global Grid Forum - GGF) regarding IPv4 Dependencies in Global Grid Forum Specifications. (CTI) GRNET IPv6 Workshop

  11. Dissemination • Organized a technical workshops in 2003 (Patra), where technical aspects of IPv6 technology where presented to the NOCs of the Greek Universities and commercial ISPs. Partners also participated in various technical and commercial workshops on networking technologies in Greece and presented IPv6 related issues, e.g. TNC2004, OTE-GRNET workshop, etc. • Become the "interconnection link" between SEEREN and 6NET projects. Inform the SEEREN beneficiary NOCs for the 6NET activities and facilitate the know-how transfer to them. Lead the SEEREN activity to upgrade the SEEREN network in order to support IPv6 services.
